Interesting discussion. On MTBF the published figures seem a bit meaningless. Desktop drives have a MTBF of 35 years. Enterprise, 70-200 years roughly. What does it mean? I’d say not a whole lot. It’s a reliability measurement, but not a particularly enlightening one. I’m sure the dud drives talked about here had identical MTBFs to their competitors. So how is it that their MTBFs were not lower? Fudged figures or a test designed to produce a certain result? And if it were truly a statistical test you wouldn’t end up with such round numbers. A lot to be skeptical about.

Good work. I don’t do this type of editing. So it’s interesting to see how well you think X works for it. I do purely documentary-style producing/shooting/editing and as far as I’m concerned, for that nothing is better than FCP X.

I won’t and I’m not sure why you would unless you’re trying to use existing PCIe cards. So certainly not true for new workstations where you might just buy thunderbolt equivalents to PCIe cards anyways or get drive unit-based RAIDs where you don’t need a card.
I would not want the headache of a Hackintosh.

Then what do you make of all the griping that these towers are underpowered. Personally, I think Apple hit it as far as price/performance assuming these are relatively the same as existing Mac Pros. I don’t see them being priced higher than existing Macs. As much as us video people like to think of ourselves as the center of the universe, these towers are also undoubtedly targeted toward high end graphic design and layout also. If they were $10-15K as many on the board seem to want them to be, they’d sell almost none of them.

I agree. I don’t get all the hand wringing over this. Until someone actually tests this thing with FCP X or Premiere Pro or whatever, we really don’t know squat. If it makes editing faster and more efficient in FCP X I’ll get it.

Hadn’t thought of that, you could still leave the Mac Pro in the equipment room and have local ports. But I’m still wondering why do all that. Aren’t you just sending tons of cable to and from the equipment room for no good reason.
If you leave the computer in the edit room, have your video interface there connected right to the monitor in the room, have your audio interface connected right to speakers in the room, connect your keyboard, mouse, control surface right in the room, the only remote thing you need is to connect to storage in the equipment room.

I wonder if the whole concept of the “equipment room” can be rethought. For me, the only reasons I want to move the computer out of the edit room is noise, heat and UPS power requirements. With this Mac Pro that is no longer an issue. I’m guessing it’s going to be practically silent, produce little heat and a small UPS will suffice.
There are enormous complications moving the computer to a different location than it is being used. Ridiculously long display cables, lack of access to plug in drives, lack of bluetooth capabilities, difficulty in modifing (moving from DVI cables to Displayport for example). Walking back and forth and back and forth to burn a DVD. It just creates efficiency problems.
I’m thinking it’s a better arrangement to have the computer in the room with the editor and have storage and network infrastructure in the equipment room.

ATI 5770 in Mac Pro 1,1 and 3,1 for me. But only because I couldn’t run FCP X. I think its unlikely that Apple will ever abandon the GPUs in the new Mac simply because they aren’t easy to replace. But maybe I’m naive. I do believe they are relatively more powerful than anything Apple has put in their Mac Pros before so they might actually last longer.

I don’t know. I could see how squaring the corners might mess up the airflow. Fans are round, not square. And just think of all the space this is going to free up on your desk. Just don’t be an idiot and stack things on it.
I never thought lack of post-it note space would be a deal breaker.
