Honestly, I’d be a happy camper if they added 3 things:
1) Robust, collaborative workflow, so two people can open the same event at the same time with better network support.
2) The ability to activate or deactivate events and projects so they don’t have to all load.
3) Better media management so you can consolidate a project. -
I think it was a missing Motion Template. The file was there, it just wasn’t in the “official” Motion Templates folder. If you don’t have FCP X itself make the Motion Templates folder, it won’t work.

Definitely a situation to cut and run. Beach ball lasted too long for it to be a normal situation. I don’t want to waste a ton of time on this as it is not super critical to retain the existing event. And if I need it, I can access it on my iMac. But what is the best way to rebuild? Make a new event? Can I relink existing projects to the new event? Or does the new event ID prevent that? I’ve never had to completely rebuild an event before so I’m not clear on how it would work.

It launches FCPX and shows all the events and projects, but it starts spinning immediately after. There is no dialogue saying what it is currently doing. The fan on the laptop kicks in a few seconds after the wheel starts spinning. I haven’t let it go for hours, because I didn’t have the time. But it’s odd that I can open it on the iMac without it spinning like that.

We use raw hard drives. The reasons primarily are cost and convenience. I don’t have to worry about the enclosure or power supply going bad. I don’t have to keep all those power supplies organized. As far as static, I’ve never had a problem with the 30 or so pairs of drives I have. I have dropped one though. I’ve had a few just go bad. The nice thing about having pairs is that it’s easy to make a new one when this happens. I could see going with a bus powered drives though.
I don’t like LTO. It may be the best for long term storage, but it’s expensive, slow to access, and capacity isn’t quite large enough for my needs (I’d need 2 tapes per hard drive). And unless you have two tape drives, a single hardware failure can knock you out of business.

The transitions have always annoyed me because it often forces you to place a clip within a secondary storyline that logically that clip should not be in. Or move a clip from primary to secondary when it really belongs in the primary. Basically it forces you to break your organizational structure. I don’t see why you can’t just transition out of any clip without it being in a storyline. Also it should just understand you’re transitioning to whatever is under it, so it would work properly with a two sided transition like a cube spin.

You’re describing AE’s keyframing, right? Because AE can certainly do that. Easily.”I’m not sure I’d say it’s easy to manipulate multiple keyframes in AE. There is absolutely no keyframe grouping in AE. So you have to hunt them down everytime you want to make an adjustment. Often finding all the keyframes you want to adjust is like finding a few needles in a haystack and sometimes and errant click will make you have to start selecting over again. I think there’s a lot of room for improvement even in AE.

I use FCP X daily and AE periodically. In general, I create short graphics that fit into 5-20 minute long videos. So opening a whole sequence/project in AE is not at all useful to me.
I like AE, but part of what I find problematic about the CC is that Adobe seems to be kicking occasional users like me to the curb. I have to really think hard about do I really need 4 computers with CC for $1200 a year for our department. That’s a chunk of change to use AE maybe 12-15 times a year and Photoshop/Illustrator 20 times a year. Previously I skipped versions to save money. That’s not a possibility now. Probably, either I’ll go down to one license for CC or just an AE license. And I’ll probably start doing more in Motion.

I think if it works now keep with it. You would be protected in case of RAID failure with the offsite backup. If the RAID fails at any point and requires rebuilding, immediately transfer your materials from the offsite backup onto a brand new single drive. And at that point ditch the RAID 1 enclosure and get a single drive enclosure.
