December 27, 2015 at 7:29 pm in reply to: HP Z800 best video card for Vegas 13 {Pro and Premiere Pro, After EfeectsThx… I put the GTX Black in and it scores approx 68 fps on Cinebench 15 but does not run Vegas better. NVidia says in all their specs they support open CL… Maybe just moral support:)
Thank you,

December 27, 2015 at 5:21 pm in reply to: HP Z800 best video card for Vegas 13 {Pro and Premiere Pro, After EfeectsNot sure why a Titan Black w/ approx 2800 cuda cores and 6gb RAM did not make the system fly.
Checking specs, the quadro k2000 has more cuda cores and a higher max resolution than the quadro 4000… the band width is about 15% less though. Both have 2GB RAM.The non Kepler ‘K’ Quadros use wattage like a crack attic.
I can pick up a Quadro 6000 6GB RAM 448 cuda cores, or Quadro k4000 3GB RAM 768 cuda cores and approx same band width.
It seems quadro 6000 will never do 4k out but the k5000 and k6000 will. Both the k2000 and k4000 is just shy at 3820…. You can still render 4k, just would be nice to have 4k preview screen in the work flow.
All this info… the Titan Black has more power than all above w/ 4k out and it iffy as best.
All that said, I think HP Z800 only considers Quadro cards qualified (so what?)… so will the
AMD cards work in the z800? I really would like to preview in 4kThank you,

My experience with BootCamp and Vegas was not that great. Like you, my desktop works great but my Toshiba i7 quad core temp shoots through the roof in just a few minuts of rendering to 100c. To solve the issue, I am thinking of using an external video card. The idea is to tell Vegas to use the video card streaming cores only, leaving the cpu use and heat down to acceptable levels. I HAVE NOT tried this yet and cannot confirm it will work.
Here are two links, VDock and DIY versions.

What was your performance experience using Vegas in BootCamp? Mine in Parallels was painfully slow! I have a 2xquad zeons, 8 core, Mac Pro. Final Cut 7 and X run fine. I would love to dual boot if there was enough performance to actually edit in Vegas more then at 1/2 speed.
FYI… I have used Vegas for years. The more comfortable and time spent with Final Cut, it has made me realize just how good Vegas is.

I bought a Quadro 2000… and was not very impressed. Sold it and went back to a Quadro 4500. A previous post by Stephen Mann pointed out that not all Vegas functions can use GPU cores. I did not know this when the quadro 2000 was in the machine. May of influenced my opinion some. I have always been a Quadro fan, but I have had a very positive experience on my Mac Pro running an ATI 5770 slicing through FCP7. As mentioned before, it seems there are more positive reports with ATI GPU. There are some post where people have purchased the exact nVidia GPU recommend by Sony to find it fell well short of published numbers.
The main turn off for the Quadro 2000 was a sluggish preview window when scrubbing or just wanting to review an edit in real time without rendering (absent multiple FX inputs).

ok, here is what I found trying to load Windows on a Mac Pro 1,1…..
Never could get 64 bit Windows 7 or 8 to load in Boot Camp. Did load Windows 8 32 bit. Keyboard becomes unresponsive before the 64 bit installer loads. This is likely related to the EFI32 in the Mac’s code. Early Macs Pros (1,1) actually are 64 bit but work on 32 bit via BIOS or software. This can be overcome by loading some fairly simple lines of code… I did not go the final step.
I did get Windows 8 64 bit to load in Parallels. So loading a 64 bit Windows OS on a Mac Pro that likes 32 bit does work within a virtualized environment. Loading Vegas 12 at this point is easy to install.
Now performance… Very, very, very bad! Did I say bad… I meant BAD! This Mac Pro is running 2 X Zeon Quad cores (8 cores, 8 threads), and an ATI 5770 GPU. Vegas running in Parallels showed unaltered Mp4 media ran at 12 to 21 fps (actual 29.97). Two effects slow down preview to 5 fps and 4 effects went down to .4 fps. Rendering was 5 to 8 time longer than the same clip using an i7 930 PC.
Well, throw out the idea of running Vegas virtualized unless you have plenty of time. I am going back on the path and find that code needed to move the Mac Pro 1,1 from 32 bits to 64 bits.
If you are considering running cpu intensive Windows based software on a Mac Pro, make sure the Mac is 2008 or newer. Make that 2009 just to be safe.

Has anyone spoke with Sony about this and got some explanation? Some posters say GPU acceleration only function with ‘some ‘ portions of the work flow.
I see…
Other people have my same problem…seem to be a nvidia problem (?)
… seen a lot. Some ATIs too, but many like this link (Vegas Pro 11): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFY1VDv7XfY
Below is from the Sony Vegas official web site…
NVIDIA
Requires a CUDA-enabled GPU and driver 270.xx or later. GeForce GPUs:
GeForce GTX 4xx Series or higher (or GeForce GT 2xx Series or higher with driver 285.62 or later).
Quadro GPUs: Quadro 600 or higher (or Quadro FX 1700 or higher with driver 285.62 or later).
NVIDIA recommends NVIDIA Quadro for professional applications and recommends use of the latest boards based on the Fermi architecture.AMD/ATI
Requires an OpenCL-enabled GPU and Catalyst driver 11.7 or later with a Radeon HD 57xx or higher GPU. If using a FirePro GPU, FirePro unified driver 8.85 or later is required.Best I can figure is, sometimes GPU acceleration works, and sometimes not.

It’s an interesting question if Windows’ programs can utilize GPU to off load some resources and speed rendering on a Mac. Freeing resources is key… keep smooth performance to edit while rendering.I’ll load BootCamp and Vegas 12 and report back for anyone who is interested. I’ll compare CPU only times Mac vs PC too.
The eight cores is of course faster than the four previous, but it still takes longer than one would guess in FCP.
I have a PC running an i7 930 near 4GHz, and it does ok. The PC needs a new GPU (running dual Quadro FX 4500) with processing cores. 2 to 3 times the rendering speed seems a good value for a few hundred bucks.
I’m trying to make a smooth work flow from FCP to and from Vegas. Also considering a common data storage solution or both.
If you have it, can you send a link to the test comparing Macs and PCs.
