[Jimmy Brunger] “As a side, don’t forget HD is square pixels and SD PAL/NTSC is not. Just directly scaling down GFX means you’ll get a very slight distortion when output on a TV. Watch circles are still circles..!”

Is this why, when outputting mixed resolutions (all at the same frame rate, 50fps) move plays fine, just my GFX that have been downscaled to suit 360p, have a distortion? I mean my clips play smoothly at 50fps just graphics are not, when playing out a HDTV.

I have set frame blending, this works well for only the graphics, since the video clips were originally 25fps, the video then does not play as smooth as they should. So basically, just adding my video clips into a comp set at 50fps, graphics set at 50P dont play like they should. Then using frame blending, graphics play fine, but know there is to much motion blur in the video.

1280 by 720, 50p will be my final output. Using 25i just hasn’t resulted in what I wanted. My final delivery will be outputting via Softron OnTheAirExpress (play-out software). Another issue is, all be clips are different resolutions, so interlacing is going to be a big issue.

    Thank you.

Thank you both for the reply. I want to convert a 25P clip from Youtube to 50fps. Reason being, is a want to overlay graphics at a smoother rate, 25i just is not the outcome I want. I know TV broadcast (PAL) use interlaced, but cant figure how they make there graphics so smooth, almost as if its progressive.

Maybe I should consider converting all my clips at 50fps. Would Compressor 4 be a good application to use to do the job of fram-rate conversion? https://www.apple.com/au/finalcutpro/compressor/

OR magic bullet frames – https://www.redgiant.com/products/all/frames/#tabs

One side note, I live in the PAL region and Im sure all TV broadcasts use 1080i interlaced. My question is, how are tv programs especially the news able to interpret 25i graphics so smoothly its almost like its progressive footage.

    Thank you Tudor

Okay thanks, Ill give that a go. What would be the best codec for rendering graphics?

    -Thanks

Thank you Tom for the reply.

Just a note on the 50i graphics in After Effects, they are still not playing as smooth as they should. Like Walter said, I create a 25fps comp, 1920 by 1080 HDTV, then when added at render, I change the fields > upper fields and render. I must be doing something wrong.

    -Thanks

Thank you Walter. Also, what would be the best way to convert a video at 25fps to 50fps? I converted a 25fps clip to 50fps, the motion is sort of “blurred”.

    -Thanks

Thank you John. Thats exactly what I needed.

  • Thank you Mike. As you can tell I’m not really sure how play-out systems work, all I image in a play out system is mulit-view of preview and program, and just hooking up my Mac via HDMI with program out to a HD TV. How does the interface look with Softron playout engine? and how many computers need to run this?

I will be using a Macbook Pro Renia display, and use After effects to add motion graphics for overlay to the video, can this software do that? How would everything fit into place?

    Thank you Mike.

  • I checked out Softron’s OnTheAir, which looks ok to, but can you add motion 60FPS graphics? and can you use program out to a TV?

    Thank you Adam.
