I appears that fileiosurrogate (the process that ‘reads & delivers files to Vegas’) has a tendency to crash when it has to read lots of files (perhaps it’s also related to the kind of files in your project)

In my example I was editing a 30 minute movie in ProRes HD 1920×1080, and at a certain point (it was around the 16 minute mark) I was getting the most weird errors:

    -Red bars on timeline
-Incendentally missing footage when opening a project (you get the dialog box to search for it)
    -Random crashes
    -Playback window malfunction

These problems appear on Windows XP and Windows 7 (32 bit or 64) when using Vegas 7, 8.1, 9.0 and 9.0a (also either 32 bit or 64).

When I finally figured out what was happening (I lost 2 days cos of this crap) the only ‘solution’ was to cut my project in half by making two edits of +- 15 minutes.

Even since the last revision I havent seen a “fileiosurrogate crash reading files” bugfix, so I bet Vegas is still broken and it will probably stay that way…

    VERY dissapointing…
