    really…
Isn’t there a compressor (not sure I’ve got the right word), that will cut out all under, say -51, but it’s got an attack and decay(again, not sure on wording) that will not totally clip the end of S sounds (etc)?

  • OK, Beta 8bit.
    But process in 10bit.
Forgive the ignorance, but if I’ve got my setups all set to 8bit, where is the 10 bit processing. Am I just confusing the issue?

THank you for the help. That gets me going in the right direction. We’re going to try the FCP 5/Tiger/Quicktime7 upgrade and pray. If it doesn’t work, a Decklink card should be our next try.
But any idea about compatibility between our Blackmagic 8-bit files and a new Kona 2 or Kona LS files. The both supposedly use the Apple Uncompressed 8 bit codec as a base, but will they play nice together?
If I go with a Kona 2 card, will I be able to restore old media digitized with the Kona SD (using blackmagic 8-bit) and use it on the Kona 2 (or LS)? Renders? Batch format changes? Screwed?
    Love to know. Thanks

Good to know I’m not the only one seeking an answer to this mystery. Any others to share?

Is this the first time this has been brought up on Creative Cow?
I find it hard to comprehend.

    thanks all

I’ve found out recently that manuals for most of these products are on-line. You have to dig some, but Panasonic, Sony, and Philips all have manuals. Usually under their support sections. Sometimes the latest greatest products are not up there yet but it’s a great resource.
I’ve found that although you can set chapters on both the panasonic and sony models, they revert to roughly every 5 minutes once you finalize the disk. Philips, which records to +R disks, says nothing about loosing the chapter markers when you finalize in the manual, but I didn’t believe it. I called Philips tech help, and they assured me that the chapter markers will live on past finalize.

I’ve heard from several places the excelent quality that Panasonic gives (thanks Borjis too), but I don’t know if Philips recorders match up. Any ideas?
The feature to NOT have a menu would be nice.

I love the idea of bringing on a set top DVD recorder for the small jobs. Instead of sending people to the local wedding guy, I can actually make some money on the call, “I’ve got some home movies I’d like to transfere to DVD.” Also, I could easily send out screening DVDs instead of screending VHS copies.

    Question:
Which, if any, of the models allow for menu’s and chapters markers? If they burn directly from a VHS, do you have to sit through the whole thing to add chapter markers, or can you do that later?
Also, can these recorders handle really bad video? What happens when a client brings in a very poor VHS tape? (aren’t they all?) Does it just gloss over sync loss and torn video?

All I need is to talk to someone who’s used these, instead of a sales guy at best buy.

    Thanks,
    BrAD
