Steve, or anyone else in the know.
I set the average bit rate and maximum bit rate to the highest settings in toast 9 (which is 26 mbps for both average and maxium), I wasnt sure if this is what you meant steve by “set to highest setting”. The blu ray came out all choked up. Can anyone tell me what my best options are for setting avg and max bitrate, considering Im having to use toast 9 to do the encoding? I’ve heard you can go all the way upto 40mbps or as low as 15mbps. Can anyone dial me in a little better than that 🙂
    thanks in advance
    Brad

    Steve,
By “set at the highest setting” do you mean set the bitrate to its highest setting in toast which is 26 for both average and maximum in toast 9? or can you explain exactly which settings you are talking about?
    thanks for your help

  • Yeah, I’m trying to transcode. Never really have done it before, not familiar with Compressor. But one things seems odd, in fcp settings when I try and set to 59.94 it seems that fcp wants it to be at dvcpro HD and and not Apple pro res. Also if I transcode files at home to Apple pro res (the normal pro res in fcp 6 not HQ) ( I dont have pro res LT or Proxy at home system FCP 6) will these files need to be rendered when I put on system on set with the LT or Proxy project on set. The guys who system Im using on the day tells me i should set it to pro res proxy on set because its more efficient in on set enviornment. Remember video assist is just reference for director on set, so quality is nice but doesnt have to be the best.
And unfortuneately I cant get to the other system until the day of the shoot.

Im just starting with HD and have always just used Ntsc 720×480 when everything was nice and easy 🙂

    Can anyone else offer info?
    thank you

  • Yes, thats exactly what im looking for. Suggestions and guidlines just as you wrote, i understand there are no hard and fast rules, but guidlines just as you posted. As well as things like when subjects entering or leaving frame, what is more visually pleasing. thanks for everyones replies

Well I compressed for DVD use authored the dvd and it came out good. But I really want to know what i need to do to my system to resolve this. I just compressed the original HDV quicktime in compressor to an H264 and that file plays just as bad. so now im a little confused. surely my system should be able to play the h264. From my specs i posted earlier, what part of my system is not up to the task. How can it be possible the h264 isnt playing fluid? ( I did keep the original resolution when compressing to h264, if that matters)
