Sorry for the delay. Thanks for that description! That could come in handy someday.
However, it’s not quite what I’m looking for. I’m looking to create an effect more than to fix something. The Rap Chop video was probably a bad example because it’s more about “correcting” rhythm. It’s also a whole lot of small adjustments that would take a long time using speed/time remapping in FCP. In most DAW software like ProTools, you can set a bunch of markers and drag them around – stretching the time, but keeping the audio the same pitch.
Another example of what I’d like to do would be the BBC show, “Jam”. It has a lot of time stretching effects. This one isn’t extreme, but it might get the point across: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0n4hclzCyE

I’m starting to understand this more now, thanks.
I realized earlier that my version of Switch was not working correctly. If I tried to convert a .aif file from 44.1kHz to 48kHz (and keep it .aif), it looked like it was processing correctly. But when I checked the new file, it was exactly the same as the original – and it would do this for any sample rate, never actually changing it.
That was keeping me from realizing the following:
When converting to mp3, the sample rate of the original file seems to remain the same when Switch converts it (.aif at 44.1k yields .mp3 at 44.1k – .aif at 48k yields .mp3 at 48k). This might be the same in other encoders as well. I haven’t tried the lower bitrates – I’m guessing you’re correct that past a point, the sample rate is automatically reduced.

Actually, just to try it, I created a new project with new default still duration, and then copied the freeze frames from my old project, and they had the same old duration as before. Is this not what you were suggesting I could do?
I’ve already solved the issue by changing the default duration, exporting the stills, then bringing them back in. It seems like there should be a quicker way though.

Thank you. I didn’t think of making a new project and bringing the stills into it. Unfortunately I already went the export/change/import route.
It wasn’t terribly difficult, but when I selected all the freeze frame stills and choose to Batch Export, FC didn’t like the file names THAT IT HAD CREATED ITSELF for the stills! (because of the colons in the timecode I guess)
So, I had to manually name each file 001-148… that seems unnecessary – but it wouldn’t let me export them otherwise. -
Thanks for clarifying all that. Everything works well now. Actually, when I select Apple DV-NTSC, Streamclip automatically chooses 720×480(something)frame, instead of 720x480DV-NTSC. I say (something) because I can’t remember exactly what it calls it right now. It seemed to work fine though. Is there a difference?

I don’t think the original quality is worth using a better codec than DV, but thanks for your help.

Thanks for clarifying that. Everything works well now.

OK. Switching the fields has seemed to help considerably. There are still some residual lines when the image moves.
Someone recommended that I convert to uncompressed QT, instead of to DV, to edit.
I’m using Compressor. Does anyone know the best settings for this?
When I select “Quicktime Movie” setting, the settings are defaulting to medium quality at 15fps. Since the original files from the camera (mpeg2) showed up as 30fps, I assume that I should set the frame rate to that and put the slider on “best” quality.Actually, now that I’m looking again, the “compression type” at the top was set to “Photo jpeg”. When I switch it to “None”, the frame rate goes to “current”. But the quality still defaults to “medium”. If I switch that to “Best”, will I be converting the best possible way to edit this in Final Cut Pro?
While I’m at it, there are a lot of audio settings. Too many as far as I’m concerned.
Compressor defaulted to “IMA 4:1”. I have no idea what that is. Anyway, my guess is that Linear PCM would be the best. There is an Apple Lossless that sounds like a good option as well. I don’t know what’s best for Final Cut, etc.
Any suggestions?

Thank you. I’m going to try a field shift and see if that works. I may end up trying to export the original mpeg2 tape.

Thank you. Another person recommended this too. I hope to try it tomorrow.
