  • I up the ante; quantum entanglement.

  • David, kudos on another great post.

It was a good read while waiting on an AE render, but now I’m going to have trouble concentrating on work again because I’m sitting here pondering the fact that time can’t be directly measured.

    Thanks, Walter, much appreciated.

I’ve been googling for info about Trapcode Suite, and found some threads from back in 2004 with a link to a free app that would allow Trapcode to render on the render nodes. It was called TrapcodeRegisterApp, but the link is down and I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

•UPDATE: I called Red Giant, and they said that each license comes with the ability to get a 5 license pack for render nodes (same goes for Magic Bullet Suite). Just give them a call and they will provide.

Is there an “Apple Hardware” forum here? I don’t see it in the list.

Your memory is better than mine … (you didn’t just now edit the wiki before posting, did you?) 😉 I guess what I saw was XSI before it was unveiled, and probably beta 3 of DS. Anyway, DS was new to me at the time since I wasn’t doing video/finishing work back then. Man, lots has changed since then. That’s back when 3D apps were $17k per license which ran on a “cheap” $9k NT-based SGI alternative, and FCP didn’t exist). I wonder what we’ll be reminiscing about in a decade from now; “yeah, I remember when Autodesk bought out Avid, it was about 5 years before they were bought by Apple to get back into the Pro Apps market which they slowly let die over the next 5 years; so, 2011 I guess, give or take a couple of years”.

I’m in the same boat. I’m in no rush, I had planned to wait a couple of months to migrate to FCP X even if it hadn’t been a disaster. I’ll be downloading and evaluating the trial for MC 5.5 and comparing it to PPro CS5 which I have as part of my production suite. I’m sure AVID has come a long way, but I’m still somewhat wary from years ago when AVID and Pro Tools were touchy with other software or hardware being installed on the same workstation (to the point that my experiences have been using systems that were 100% dedicated to one or the other–no Adobe, etc.).

I demoed an MX02 last year, and found that it had a lot of issues. I haven’t used an Io Express before, but it looks like it’s the same sort of design, where the PCIe card is just sending the data to the external box where the actual hardware resides, rather than all of the hardware being on the PCIe card which has a breakout box external. I think if Avid is serious about competing with Adobe for the FCP user install base, they need to get a deal with AJA set in stone for Kona support, and announce it ASAP. In my experience, the Konas are pervasive as the de facto hardware i/o standard for most FCP suites. Perhaps they are waiting to announce support for the next TB hardware from AJA, but time is of the essence judging from the posts in the FCP X forum, and those making the decisions now are going to want to know that their existing Kona 2/3/LHi cards are going to be supported before they board the AVID ship.

That’s good advice. Is AVID still touchy about system updates? Back in my AVID days I recall having system updates render AVID and ProTools useless on more than one occasion.

Softimage unveiled DS at Siggraph ’99.

Thanks for the replies. That’s too bad–DS was a super slick tool in its first revision. Smoke looks great, and I’d probably go that route if the new low price wasn’t still out of budget. I guess it’s between Premiere Pro which I already have as part of the Production Premium suite, or back to AVID proper. Well, unless Apple releases the TB 16-core Mac Pros along with Lion on Thursday … and then unlocks all of the missing features in the Lion build; “FCP X Extreme”, including 64-bit Soundtrack, 64-bit Compressor, and an integrated node-based Phenomenon compositor with a real 3D environment and useable motion graphics tools. Sigh … the kid in me will miss speculating about what will be released next by Apple, and when … the professional preditor in me will not.
