  • [Wayne Carey] “Confusus Say… When system acting weird, trash preferences.”

I think THAT is what started this whole thing.

  • What do you want it to do?

    1-Open to PREVIOUS project?

    2-Open to NEW (untitled) project?

3-Open to a hierarchy of folders (like Avid)?

If its “3” then I solve this by going FIRST to my FCP Projects folder(s) and clicking directly on the project I want to open.

[Reave Watkins] “st have been something rubbing in there you think?

More likely that something was NOT rubbing and when you put it back together you made some metal contact that’s acting as a shield.

    Try this as an experiment.

COVER the entire mic with aluminum foil (like a baked potato) and make sure you contact the foil with a wire connected to the mixer’s XLR pin 1.

See if that quiets the noise completely.

This will indicate if the hum is coming from OUTSIDE the mic’s shell.

    This is not a joke.
I own many expensive studio condenser microphones.

But here is a link to a Mic that simply will work perfectly for basic VO work (and yes, it can make an “adequate” voice sound good and a “good” voice sound GREAT.)

It is not a Neumann, but its not a Radio Shack ball-mic either.

    https://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=rec/s=mics/search/detail/base_pid/273156/

The price varies between is $49.99 (yes, that’s 1 cent under $50)
up to $69.99, depending on what kind of sale is happening at the moment..
(It’s $49.99 at the time of this posting.)

I’m not kidding, this is a terrific mic. It requires Phantom Power to run (the standard is 48 volts, but I have easily run this mic on 12v -20v Phantom power from a battery-powered mixer.)

This mic also sounds quite good on string instruments and woodwinds.
It is very sensitive and can be over-powered by percussion and some brass instruments.
There is another version (for about $100 more) that has a 10db attenuator for use under LOUD conditions.

Info on this mic has been posted on the COW many times and it gets surprised and grateful responses from those who buy it. There are hundreds (thousands?) of these mics in studios around the world.

  • [BCP LLC] “…would give more detailed information but they are concerned about confidentiality (because they’re the first of their type to do something of this manner).

Why is it I doubt that’s even a little bit true?

Nobody has ever thought of using out-of-house-supplied tapes in a TV show.

The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

    Next:
THE FOLLOWING COMES FROM THE KEN STONE WEBSITE:
“Over 5,000 years ago Confucius wrote: ‘If you are toiling away, you have changed nothing and FCP heads South on you, [starts behaving in strange ways] then it is time to trash your FCP Preferences.’ ”

Click the following link for instructions.

    https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/trashing_fcp_prefs.html

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCP (Pro) & FCE (Express) and a new one for FCP 5.

Download these free Apple Scripts at

    https://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
    or
    https://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/

This is one FCP tip that has helped in solving hundreds of “odd” problems.

If you can’t get the original camera, you can try playing it on any number of other cameras or decks. You might get lucky and you might not.

Heck, it might not even play in the original camera.

No way to tell unless you try.

Change the speed of the roll.

    Change the font.

Change the size of the letters.

Change the transparency of the letters.

    Change the background.
