The first thing to always try is to Quit FCP, Restart the Mac, Open your FCP project and try again.

Good sentiment, but a bit inaccurate as to WHY the LP speed is unreliable.
It has nothing to do with a tape being “stretched”.There’s nothing very special about LP, the camcorder just “slows down the transport” and pulls the tape past the heads at a slower speed.
BUT, the heads are still spinning at the same rate as DV SP, while they attempt to lay down as much digital information as SP. However, the tape is not traveling at a rate high enough to allow “enough space between” the head-swipes (tracks) to make for a reliable recording/playback situation. The tracks on the tape can nearly OVERLAP and cause “confused” playback info.
It therefore REQUIRES that the “tracking” (and head alignment) on the playback unit be EXACTLY the SAME as the record unit so as to be able to track that very small “sweet spot” on the tape.
There is a very good chance that any LP tape will NOT playback on any unit other than the one it was recorded on and, even WITH that unit, it will be 30% more likely that there will be visible dropouts on playback.If you try to use LP for anything important (I consider any time I go to SHOOT it is important) you stand a very good chance that what you record will be fraught with problems (if it actually PLAYS at all).
The miss-tracking reveals itself in blocky dropouts, image freezes and “no video” (or audio) situations.
Stretched tape or not-stretched tape, just consider LP as unreliable.

You should try to get the camcorder that recorded the tapes.
You could either try to capture from that unit directly, or make FW copies to another DV unit recording at DV SP speed.LP mode will not usually play on a unit that did not record the tapes (and sometimes not even on THAT unit.)

There are two TYPES (kinds) of fonts:
Type 1 (PostScript)
Type 2 (TrueType)The native FCP titlers cannot use or see Type 1 fonts, only Type 2 fonts.
(But “Title 3D” and “Title Crawl” can use both types, even from inside the FCP app.)You need a copy of Ppt on your Mac so you can re-create the slides with the font(s) you want.
You will need a font that a Mac Ppt app. can “see” (I don’t know which type it uses, I’m guessing Type 2).You need a “Jester” face (or similar) that is compatible with the Mac Ppt. app.

Here’s a very FAST way to create a flash.1. Add a new video layer above the clip(s) you want to “flash”:
2. On that layer, edit a one-frame clip of a WHITE color Matte.
3. Add a 5-frame Dissolve on the right side of that White Matte.
4. Render

Well, I took a chance (Musician’s Friend is just across the Mo. River from some local gambling casinos…
I’d rather take a chance on “gear” than on a “slot”.)Got it home and (as I’d suspected) the element was loose inside.
I opened it up, reattached the element and all was well.
I decided to pull out one of my RE20s and installed this mic.
It sounds very nice for VO. -
“If you DON’T have a clip selected (highlighted), then the zoom will change at the point at which the cursor is sitting.”
So, as long as you do NOT have any clip(s) selected (highlighted, by touching them with the cursor) on the timeline, if you hit the ZOOM key (Apple +) the timeline will expand, centered on the cursor (“playhead”).
If the zoom “jumps” to another area on the timeline, it means that you already had a clip “selected”.
You can “de-select” any selected clip(s) by hitting Shift-Cmd-A (think of it as UN-“select all”).
Its easy to try this out.

The project I’m trying to work with was created in FCP 4.5. I am still working in 4.5 (but of course, am using the updated version of Quicktime, which I was not using before).
I think the above is the culprit. That seems the most likely.
Did you RENDER everything?

If its still not working, try this:File (menu) > Export > Quicktime Movie… > Current Settings / Audio and Video / CHECK the “Make Movie Self-Contained” box.
This will give you a QT movie that should be playable when dropped back into FCP.

Another “available on every Mac” method is to use iTunes to resample CD and mp3 audio.
QT PRO works fine… but iTunes is also a simple ready process after the initial set-up presets:
iTunes > Preferences > Importing > AIFF> Custom > 48.000 kHz, 16 bit, Stereo >OKOnce these are set, you won’t have to set them again.
Put a CD in the Mac (or use a imported audio file that’s already on the HD), open it up in iTunes, click once on the track you need, and choose:
Advanced > Convert Selection to AIFF.Works VERY fast and stores new 48 kHz file in the iTunes library. You can just “drag and drop” this new file (.aif) onto your open FCP Browser.
