everyone who does not backup their data, will eventually lose their data. Drives fail. Even SSD’s fail.

well here are some lessons –
1) NEVER use RAID 0
2) ALWAYS backup your data – I don’t care if it’s RAID 0, RAID 5 or RAID 6 – ALWAYS backup your data.if your answer is “I can’t afford to backup my data” then my reply is NEVER EVER USE RAID 0.

I am confused –
you write –
I also have a set of four drives that were previously used as an array in this same box, but I don’t need that data any longer.So you don’t care about the lost data ? then just throw out drive 1, throw in all replacement drives, and create a new RAID and you are back in business.

well, unless I am mis reading what you wrote –
you state that drive #4 is failed, and that drive # 1 is trying to rebuild.
This is never going to happen.
In a RAID 5 configuration, you can only have ONE drive fail before you lose your data. So if drive 4 failed, you should have replaced drive 4, and it would have rebuilt the RAID 5 array. But it appears, from your description that drive #1 is trying to go into rebuild mode, which means that drive #1 has also failed. But it’s not going to rebuild, because this is not a RAID 6 array (where you can have 2 drives fail) – its RAID 5, which means that if one drive fails (drive 4), and then a second drive fails, you are screwed, and you lose all your data. You should have replaced drive #4 when it failed.
Since you have had this for a while, with no issues, this means that these drives are the same age – they are probably at the end of their life (all of them) – because they spin around at 7200 RPM day after day, year after year, and ALL drives eventually fail – enterprise or not.A data recovery company do recover a RAID array will cost you more than the cost of an entire new RAID array. I fully understand you need your data.

My budget stinks!
ding ding ding ding ! There it is Ned. It’s not you. It’s your budget. And not just your budget – it’s everyone’s budget. Today, NO ONE (and I work for big companies) wants to spend any money. Everything is too expensive. The idea of any company buying a Sony HD Cam deck in 2017 is simply inconceivable to me. How companies like EVS and Quantum continue to find customers is a complete mystery to me.
I send 4 emails back and forth today to some poor AVID assistant editor in LA today, because he wants to find out why his 6 drive shared storage system is stuttering playback with 4 editors, and I said “you have a 12 bay chassis – just add the rest of the drives, but at least add two drives” – and instead of spending a few hundred bucks for 2 drives to resolve this problem, his BOSS (not this poor kid) was pressuring him to find out exactly why they needed to justify the cost of TWO SATA drives to resolve this problem – is this expense really necessary ? !!!!!!!!Now, others who read this will say “well, Bob, you are an idiot, why are you dealing with customers like this”. But as time goes on, this is becoming ALL the customers. This is why Blackmagic is so wildly successful. They understand the #1 rule – people want everything, and they want to pay nothing for it.

you cannot use a web browser to manage the XS708E – so unless you load the Netgear .exe file on a Windows PC, you will never be able to manage this with a simple product like Firefox, Safari or Chrome. For remote access over the internet, I feel it’s critical to have a web browser management – so I prefer the more expensive switch for that reason.
