I mean no offense with this post, but I can see that you have little experience with this stuff. A reference loop appears on devices that have GENLOCK INPUTS, with a looping input. The Horita BSG-50 (and others) send a black signal that locks the genlock inputs.I mention all of this, becuase the Horita requires that you TERMINATE the looping input (of the AJA I/O or AJA K3-Box for example). If you DO NOT TERMINATE the input (with a 75 ohm BNC terminator), it will appear that the Horita BSG-50 is not working. YOU MUST TERMINATE THE LOOPING INPUT. If you loop from VTR to VTR, to I/O to Kona, to something else, the last item in the line MUST BE TERMINATED. This can be the 75 ohm ON switch on a Sony VTR, or it can be a 75 ohm BNC connector that you put on the back of the AJA I/O. If you say “aah screw it, I don’t need it” – THE HORITA WILL APPEAR AS IT IS DOING NOTHING and you will get poor results.
If you say “well, how come AJA doesn’t give you a terminator with the I/O box”, etc. – it’s like saying how come audio mixers don’t come with cables, how come VTR’s dont’ come with tapes. When you get into this business, you have to buy lots of little stuff.

you guessed it – use 8 bit uncompressed – it will be fine. Remember, the AVID Meridian systems, used by network shows, are 8 bit uncompressed – so if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for you.

Everyone here is correct – SATA is cheap, and it is intriging because of this (and I use it all the time), but there is no RAID protection like from companies like Medea and HUGE Systems. Both companies offer RAID 3 protection, and both products are excellent (and more expensive). In contrast to this, I just received a call (Sunday 7/9/06) from WFTV in Orlando – their Apple XServe RAID (raid 5) lost a drive, and it will not do the rebuild with the replacement drive. SO – if you have more money to spend, stick with companies like HUGE and MEdea.

the Fusion 500P is SILENT, and so is the promax port multiplier chassis – they are quiteter than the MAC G5. They make no noise. (yes, there are cooling fans). The cable is a standard legnth (SHORT) eSATA to eSATA cable, that I believe cannot be extended. Most people keep the drive ontop of the G5 or just to the side of it (if there are multiple units.

LaCie S2S. We’re getting 135mb/sec running 4+1. 4 drives for media, 1 drive in backup mode.
REPLY – you will get faster performance from the Fusion 500P, the ProMax array, or almost anyone else with 4-5 drives.
