1) the Seagate Ironwolf drives will work just fine. I continue to use HGST NAS drives, or WD RED Pro (7200 RPM) drives. WD Gold series are excellent too. Just don’t use Seagate Constellation drives. But yes, if you want the Ironwolf drives, they will work as well.

2) your old Mac Pro can have a Sonnet Presto 10Gbase-T card installed in it, and this can be connected to your shared storage system as well.

3) you have not specified a switch. You MUST have a 10G Network switch that is dedicated for this project. IF there are only a few computers, the cheapest way to do this is with the new QNAP QSW-1208-8C, which is an 8 port 10G switch for $589 US, and yes, it’s available now. IF you use someone like me to remote in, to setup your system, a better choice is the Netgear XS708T, because this switch can be web managed. This means that I could set it up over the internet. The QNAP switch is unmanaged (it’s plug and play).

4) is the QNAP quiet – yes it is. It’s very quiet. But it does speak to you. It has a little speaker in it, and when it gets full, or a drive fails, or you are booting it up, it will speak to you in English. I am not making this up.

5) with this QNAP, and an 2017 iMac, 2017 MacBook Pro or 2017 iMac Pro, the Sonnet Solo 10G will do between
900 – 1000 MB/sec both READ and WRITE. YES – I have tested this, both at NAB 2018, and I have the first one installed right now at Universal Studios Orlando.

let me be clear – NO ONE is going to REPAIR your box. Let’s say the power supply is failing, and it’s a bad capacitor in the power supply that costs 6 dollars. NO ONE IN THE WORLD is going to put the labor out to fix it for you, for your 2008 box. If you value your data, replace the unit. Most Areca modern raid arrays, will instantly mount the old data, as the MRAID format has not changed.

Buy a 6TB drive – perhaps buy 2 6TB drives, and back it up .

$194 each. Make a backup of the original, and a second backup. So you have the 8 year old version, and two new clones of the data – one at your home, and one in a safe, or a friends house.

If you dare say “well, I really wasn’t planning on spending $194 per drive – isn’t there something cheaper” – well, then I guess your film has no value.

You can use Super Duper, ChronoSync, Carbon Copy Cloner, or ShotPut Pro, or the new Hedge.Video to clone your drive.

your RAID array has become corrupt. I would normally tell you to run Disk Warrior, but you are running an Apple operating system that is over 10 years old – Mac OS 10.5.8. There are no repair utilities that I can recommend that work anymore. This is why you must constantly keep your system updated.

You state in your last line of this post –
One of the hard disk got failed in the RAID and i replaced 2days before and rebuilding is completed.

this is why I always do RAID 6 today. I have been in situations in the past, where I am doing a RAID 5 rebuild and a second drive fails. You now lose all your data, and there is nothing you can do.

If your operating system is 10.5.8, I assume that your drives are VERY old, and all about to fail. You had a second drive failure during the rebuild. There is nothing you can do. I suggest that you tell your boss, that it’s time to buy a new system. No one can run computer equipment that is over 10 years old.

boy oh boy, this is a confusing post – both this one, and your second post.

1) Promise does not sell empty RAID arrays. They come populated, and are pre raided for your use.

2) you expect to have shared storage for 6 people ? Well unfortunately, if you are going to stick the Pegasus on a thunderbolt 3 Mac running High Sierra Server, macOS 10.13 Server no longer works properly, and you will be unsuccessful with simple file sharing with a configuration like this. I know – I used to build Mac based server systems from 2008 until December 2017, when they released High Sierra. Then everything stopped working. You certainly could keep an older OS like Sierra 10.12.6 on your Mac server.

3) you need a minimum of 8 SATA drives running to achieve the speeds that you want. 4 drives are not fast enough to serve 6 simultaneous editors.

4) your SSD Media Cache (if you are using Premiere) CANNOT be on the shared volume. Your SSD Media Cache should be kept local to the computer. Your video media, and project files can be kept on the shared storage.

5) all of this can easily be done by an 8 bay Network Attached storage system from a company like QNAP, Synology or Netgear for very little money, compared to a Promise Pegasus R8 and a dedicated Mac Pro or iMac combo. And the Mac mini (which is Thunderbolt 2) is too slow for this application for 6 editors.

6) for backup, you can purchase a second network attached storage system, and backup to this second system that you keep at your home.

No matter what you do, you need a 10G port in your server, and a 10G switch. You can get a QNAP QSW-1208-8C 8 port 10G switch for $589. WiFi is not fast enough to edit over, and you won’t be doing 4K editing over a 1G Ethernet connection.

I am an iPhone owner. You want flaws ? I make my living by being on the phone. I have a professional Plantronics headset that is plugged into the phone. Why is there no headphone jack on the iPhone X ? Perhaps I should order 2 or 3 sets of Apple Bluetooth wireless headsets, so I can be on the phone continuously for 8 – 10 hours.

I work with high speed networks for editing. Why don’t Apple laptops have an Ethernet port on them. Why do they need a thunderbolt 3 to Ethernet adaptor (which Belkin makes for them, and Foxconn recently purchased Belkin for $800 Million dollars). I am surely grateful that THIRD PARTY COMPANIES like Sonnet, Promise, Akitio and CalDigit are now making Thunderbolt 3 to 10G adaptors, and Thunderbolt 3 docks, because PROFESSIONALS have all kinds of STUFF that they have to plug in to their computers, to make a living.

Because professionals need to plug stuff INTO a computer to make a living. People having fun with a computer, or their phone, don’t need that stuff. Apple likes appealing to their mass audience, so they can make money. But PROFESSIONALS have to suffer way to often because of this.

When I go to purchase a car, I am looking for convenient features. I am not a race car driver, and I am not looking for race car features that a professional driver would be looking at. But EVERYONE on this forum is a race car driver when it comes to editing (and phones) and we need all the features, and we will continue to complain when we can’t get those features.

Hi David –
contact Apple ? There is no one at Apple to contact. You will find that Apple has moved the file share functions into the operating system itself of macOS High Sierra, and it now works very poorly, compared to every previous version that was in the macOS Server software. Why did they do this ? I have no idea. You can see for yourself. Plug in multiple computers to a switch, choose one of the computers, create a folder, and stick a file in it, and turn on File Sharing in System Preferences> Sharing. Mount the drive, and modify the file. Now go to another computer, and do the same. Watch what happens. It’s beyond me why Apple ruined this simple function, that worked flawlessly for years.

So what to do now ? You already started in the right direction – you own a Netgear ReadyNAS – but you probably have the wrong one. Any of the NAS boxes that are PROFESSIONAL (minimum 8 drives, 10G port, and you use a 10G switch, not the 4 ports on your wireless router) will work. Anything from Netgear, Synology, and QNAP will work, IF you buy the correct product, and hook it up correctly.

Win 7 – you know that they don’t make Win 7 anymore. Win 10 only. So I guess you have an old computer.
CS6 – they don’t make that anymore – so I guess you have a free copy with a serial # for CS6, and I guess you probably have a free Win 7 PC, and a free copy of CS6. And you are editing a feature film ? Is George Lucas the producer ?
Yes, 1TB is more than enough, as long as you don’t put your media on this drive. Remember, with Adobe software, you will have a media cache, and you have to make sure the media cache does not fill up your boot drive.

RAID 0, for a feature film ? I guess you don’t care if a drive fails, because in RAID 0, if a drive fails, you lose all your data.
So is 24 TB enough for your feature film ? Gee – I don’t know. You should use AJA Data Calc to figure out how much space you will use. You have not said what codec you will be working in. With RED 4K r3d files, there are LOTS of variations – you can see all of this at red.com/tools/recording time.

SO – for this feature film – are you finishing the film (is this final quality) or are you just doing the offline with proxy files ? Will you conform back later to the original hi res R3D media, and color grade later ? Out of curiosity, is this being done in LA, or somewhere else ?
