the Firmtek Thundertek PX2+2 was from 2014, so it’s an old product.
I am amazed that Firmtek is still in business.
You apparently can order directly from Firmtek –
but why not buy a modern product from Akitio or Sonnet that will do the same job, and is readily available from your dealers in the UK (and Amazon).bob Zelin

BTW, I have an 872xt arriving shortly. I will be loading it with 8x WGST He12 drives and connecting it to a QNAP QSW-1208-8C-US 10GbE switch. I wonder how many days it will take to build the RAID.

It takes about 10 minutes to build the RAID. It will “optimize” for about 24 hours, but you can start to use the RAID after the RAID group (RAID 5 or RAID 6) is built. About 10 – 15 minutes tops. Yes, you will get full speed at that time.The first project I’m loading up has will have about 25TB of R3D media and close to 30TB of media overall. I already have 14TB of R3D media and over 17TB overall. But I still have more to shoot in early January. I then have two other projects that will shoot about 10TB each before the end of January.
REPLY – 60 to 90 minutes per terabyte over a 10G connection. So prepare for a full 2 days to do the data transfer.
And yes, your system will slow down when trying to transfer 30 TB of data. Don’t do big data transfers while you are trying to edit. This applies to any system, from any manufacturer.Bob Zelin

you can get Seagate Ironwolf drives (any size you like) or WD RED Pro drives.
You cannot use Seagate Constellation drives, or Seagate Barracuda drives. They are unreliable.
You can spend the money for Seagate Ironwolf Pro drives, but they are more money. I never use those.You CANNOT use WD RED drives – they are 5400 RPM, and are too slow for this application.
You MUST purchase WD RED Pro drives if you choose WD as a brand.I advise against Toshiba drives, as they are ok, but are not as reliable as the Seagate Ironwolf or WD RED Pro.
Your Netgear XS716T switch is fine.

yes, that model is fine.
You are paying more for the 550 Watt power supply. The larger power supply is used in case you put an Nvidia GPU card into the QNAP, so it can power it. But you will never do this, as you have to create a VM (virtual machine) in the QNAP, load Windows 10 into the virtual machine, and that’s how the GPU function works in the QNAP. It’s not “plug and play” like it is on a Win 10PC, or like an AMD card on a Mac with a Sonnet or Blackmagic Box.Bob Zelin

but it’s $2300 quid. You can add any size drives you want, but you need all 12 drives. Don’t worry about the SSD’s.Span will not know how to configure this for video editing, so you need someone to assist you with the setup. Not unless you are up for the challenge.
Don’t forget the 10G switch and the 10G adaptors for your computers.

I always get a kick out of articles like what Tom posted. It reminds me of the original FCP add, that showed a complex edit suite, and the copy of the ad said “The $50,000 edit suite, now $995”. Giving the impression that all you needed was a copy of FCP, and don’t worry about all that other equipment in the picture (which I believe had a Sony Digi Beta in the image) – all you need is $995.
Same with this Red/NVidia story. Yea, just grab your old Windows XP computer that you got at Best Buy that’s been sitting in your basement, pop in the new NVidia card, and now you can do 8K editing. No concern about the computer, CPU processing, RAM, power supply, monitor, RAID array (which should be SSD’s or M.2 SATA) – nnnaaaah – don’t worry about that – just get the NVidia card and you will be fine.Just like the posts we see like “How come I can’t play back this 4K multiclip job on my MacBook Air”.

I don’t know where you are located.
QNAP international distribution varies depending on your location.
If you are in London, Span seems to be able to get new QNAP models before anyone here in the US.
So the TVS-872XT is certainly not available yet in the US. Neither are many of the new models that you see
on the QNAP site. But the TVS-872XT is certainly a “best value” if you are looking for an 8 bay. With that said, it will not be as powerful as the current TS-1685 or TS-1677X or of course, the larger enterprise products (TVS-EC1680U or TS-1677XU-RP). I will be installing my first TS-1677XU-RP in London tomorrow (I am in the US).As for your cabling – your bonded Cat 6 cabling will be fine if it is properly terminated, and your runs are under 55 meters. If you are running Media Composer, the QNAP will work well, and Indiestor Mimiq works great for multiple users. Since you mention Media Composer, and Fiber Channel – if you are using AVID Unity, then you are the last person I am aware of that is still using AVID Unity. I am amazed that it is still running, if in fact you are using one.

Belden 1872A is called Cat6e, which is bonded Cat 6 cable (and it’s a nightmare to work with unless you have the tools for bonded cable.).but if it’s in place, then yes, it will work perfectly for up to 55 meters. No one is using Fiber Channel anymore.
The TVS-873e requires a 10G card, like the QNAP QXG-10G1T (89 bucks). If you are not doing this tomorrow – QNAP will very soon release the new TVS-872XT, that will be more powerful, and has the 10G card already built into it (B&H street price should be about $1800 for the empty 8 bay – just add drives).The QNAP switch is “ok” for an 8 port switch – it’s the QSW-1208-8C. As for running AVID, you are not running AVID on any QNAP unless you have Indiestor Mimiq software on each workstation. This applies to many network attached storage systems. All other software is ok.
