    I am on the QNAP forums every day. If you mention the word “Video Editing”, I will find your post.
    NFS is not FCP protocol. FCP X has been using standard SMB since FCP X 10.3. It works perfectly fine. However, if you have not enabled NFS for your shared folder on your QNAP, it’s not going to work.

    When you setup a shared folder on the QNAP, you also assign a user ID and Password (under Users). Then you go to the “Shared Folders” Icon in Control Panel, and assign permissions, so that your user (you) has R/W access. Like I said, if you are using NFS (and why you are doing that in 2019 is beyond me) – and you don’t have NFS enabled, and activated for that shared folder, it wont work on the QNAP.

    IF you have permissions issues on the QNAP that seem strange to you, you go to File Station, find your shared folder, right click on it (Properties) select the KEY icon, and assign recursive permissions to all the files.

    I assume you are running a current firmware version on your TVS-871T.

    On top of all of this, you should really be using 10G and not thunderbolt 2. It will be much more reliable for you. A thunderbolt 2 to 10G adaptor from Sonnet (the Solo 10G T2) is $199, and will plug directly into one of the 10G ports on the QNAP.

    To relieve issues with speeds and “weird characters” on the Mac connection, you should disable SMB signing, and disable DS_Store on the Mac. This applies to any Mac and a shared storage system.

    simple answer – get the Promise Pegasus R6.
    Why would you go thru the aggrivation of getting a NAS system, when you don’t need shared storage ?
    The Promise will plug in and work. It will just mount on your desktop. And a 6 drive DAS system will be faster than a 4 drive NAS system.

    And I do QNAP systems every day. Get the Promise for your application.

    RAID 6 allows for TWO drives to fail before you lose all your data. With modern boxes, like the TS-1685, you will get beeps, red lights, a LCD display that shows “drive 5 failed” and it will SPEAK TO YOU telling you a drive has failed from the little internal speaker on the unit. And of course, this shows up on the QNAP QTS user interface, and you can setup email notifications as well.

    When you purchase a TS-1635ax (which I have done too many times) you save about $1400 US from the cost of a
    TS-1685. If someone steals your TS-1685 (or it is damaged in fire or flood), you can simply start to use the redundant unit (your backup system) right away. The TS-1635ax will be too slow to edit from – and you still have to buy a set of matching drives – so it’s up to you.

    If it were me, and I had to choose between the TS1635ax (which is $1499) or the TVS-872XT (which is $1799) as the backup unit, there is no question that I would choose the TVS-872XT. This is a much better product.

    REPLY – Marco – you are really overthinking all of this. I have installed over 400 QNAP systems.
    I will respond below –

    We think to go with:
    QNAP TS1685 (for the main unit)
    what I don’t like of TS1685 is that it hasn’t 2 power units. I wonder it in few monts qnap will go with something similar to QNAP TS1685 BUT with redundant power.

    REPLY – The TS-1685 is the most popular unit that I install. It’s great, and it’s fast. I have NEVER EVER seen a power supply fail on the TS-1685 (or any other professional QNAP unit). Drives fail, they release corrupt firmware sometimes, but I have NEVER EVER seen a dead power supply from them. If you are nervous, then get a
    QNAP TS-1677XU-RP or TS-1277XU-RP which has redundant power supplies. Those are great, but they cost a little more because of the rackmount configuration. They do not make a “desktop” model with a redundant power supply. And they are not going to release a desktop model soon with redundant power supplies. If you want that, you buy a rack mounted version.

    …and we would use something like TVS-872XT or TVS-EC1080+ or TS-1635AX as the backup system
    what I like from TVS-EC1080+ is that is compact and have 10 storage drives, but I ask you an advice about it.

    REPLY – I don’t know why you keep bringing up the TVS-EC1080U. I don’t even see it on the QNAP site any longer, and it doesn’t even come with a 10G card. The TS-1685, and TVS-872XT are much better values. The TTS-1635AX is half the price of the TS-1685 and TS-1677x, but is VERY SLOW. Just because it has 10G ports does not mean that it runs at 10G speeds. So you will save $1400 in the price, but you will suffer with the data transfer rate.

    What is the vanilla number of hard drives best for a backup system (where is not important speed but realibility)
    I think the minimum number of drives ammissible for a raid 10 (with 2 spare drives).
    What do you think?

    REPLY – you are not going to run RAID 10. I don’t give a CRAP what articles you read on line. You will run RAID 6, or if you are feeling “lucky” you will run RAID 5. With RAID 6, you will get amazing performance with all of your client workstations, and they will all be able to edit in 4K. You are not going to get the “least number of drives”. You need a MINIMUM of EIGHT spinning SATA drives to make this work. So you should load up the TVS-872XT with ALL the drives, and while you can put only 8 drives in the TS-1685, you should get all 12. You get Seagate Ironwolf drives, that are 7200 RPM, and you will be fine. If you don’t like Seagate, you can spend more and get WD RED.

    this is the XS716T from Netgear. It’s 16 ports – and it costs $1142, and supports IEEE 802.3ad.

    Figure 2 shows two STACKED Netgear switches. You just don’t take two XS708T or XS712T switches, and run a cable between them, and they act like one switch. These are STACKED (which are only specific models of switches from
    Netgear, Cisco, Extreme, Arista, etc.) So when you STACK the switches, now you can run out the two ports on the QNAP (or any shared storage system) and create the LAG.

    from Figure 2 explanation –
    “it is far easier to implement a distributed LACP solution with stackable switches that allow link aggregation across the
    stack. In this configuration, the stack acts as a single logical switch and link aggregation is seamless.”

    No stack – no LACP, no increase of bandwidth.

    Figure 3 ALSO shows STACKABLE Netgear switches.

    And from Figure 4 –
    “LACP active-active teaming is distributed across four
    stacked switches, delivering excellent resiliency and availability while providing a connection to the same logical switch”

    So to stress one more time – just because you have 2 or more cheap 10G switches, does not mean that you get to split the load between the 2 switches with a cross connection cable between the two. The switches MUST support stacking, so they appear as a single switch.

    While running up to eight cables from switch to switch can create an 80 Gb/sec bandwidth – that’s just between the 2 switches that you are doing this to. You now have to create the LACP LAG between your server (the QNAP or other server) and your switch. So if you have FOUR stacked switches, and you have FOUR 10G ports in your QNAP, you can run one 10G port on the QNAP to each of the four STACKED switches, and then get 40 Gb/sec bandwidth from the server to the switches. But this only works if you have stackable switches – and none of the low end Netgear or QNAP or Buffalo or DLink 10G switches are stackable.

    Use an M4300 series (which is $4000 empty – you now add the ports) and yes, you can accomplish what you are describing.

    perhaps I am missing something. Small Netgear 10G switches – everything from the XS708T to the XS748T do not support stacking. When you have a switch that supports stacking, you can combine switches so they act like one switch.

    These are Netgear stacking switches, where you can run cables from switch to switch to get them to act like a single switch.

    Unless I am missing something here, you cant take two Netgear 8 port XS708T’s, and “combine them”. If you loop them, the second switch will have less bandwidth. I have done this in situations where clients simply refuse to purchase a larger switch due to expense. So I stick the producers stations on the “looped” switch.

    If you have a QNAP for example, with a dual port 10G card (like a TVS-1282T for example), and put one 10G port into one switch and the other 10G port into another switch, then the clients on each switch have to connect to the IP address of that 10G port on the QNAP. If you trunk (LAG) the two QNAP ports in the QNAP Network menu, and you have not created a LAG on the switch (specifically an IEEE 802.3ad LACP LAG), you don’t get greater bandwidth.

    Like I said, perhaps I am missing something here – or perhaps you could put up the link to the Netgear document that you are referring to.

  • if you get a small QNAP, like a TVS-872XT, and a small switch like a QNAP QSW-1208-8C, you will be able to do not only 1080p but 4K from all of your clients, ALL at the same time, all reading the same media. That is what shared storage is about.

    You are not going to use your current network infrastructure. You are creating a new dedicated 10G network (after all, it’s only 3 computers, and the QNAP is tiny, and can fit under your desk).
