ok – just one more (which is similar to the Actors one) –
I am trying to contact an editor that I don’t know. It appears that he is young.
Via Google, LinkedIn, etc. I finally find his webpage.
No phone, no email on how to contact him – nothing.
So he is “out there” – but there is no way to contact him.
So – how does he get work if someone wants to use him ?Bob

AND – if you DO want to do a Synology system – I can do that for you as well. Like I said – Synology systems work quite well – IF you get the right Synology system.
Why is everyone telling you to NOT involve your IT department ? Simple – because they don’t know how to do this, and they will fail. When you purchase wonderful products from Lumaforge or SNS, and you spend all that money, you are paying for their GREAT SUPPORT, that you will not get from your in house IT department. Same with the other video companies. If you purchase a cheaper product from QNAP or Synology, then you use a contractor like me, that knows how to do this. And as I mentioned, I have recently discovered the ProMax MediaHub, which is also wonderful, inexpensive, and you can use either their support, or my support in making this work.
NOW – perhaps if your in house IT team had any interest in studying these products, attending some trade shows, and making the research calls, instead of you – then maybe they would succeed. But they obviously won’t – and you have now been stuck with this assignment. All they know is Windows Server 2016, and they can’t be bothered with anything else. I believe that I explained to you in my original post (perhaps I am wrong) that instead of a Synology, you can get either a QNAP system or ProMax MediaHub system for very little money, that will do exactly what you want.
Feel free to contact me. This will save you tons of money.

a. Why are there no Video House Case studies on Synology? It makes me doubt if they can handle the required sustained speeds.

simple answer – because no one at Synology gives a damn about professional video applications.
If you go to community.synology.com, and search either for Video Editing, or my name, you will see that I have asked why no one is asking about video editing solutions, and their “expert” Michael Chang actually said that the Synology might not be fast enough to support multiple people editing in real time. This of course, is WRONG INFORMATION. Synology makes GREAT products – but they have no interest in the video industry. They never show up to video trade shows, and never promote video applications. QNAP does. This does not mean that QNAP is better than Synology – it’s just that Synology does not care. It seems like I am the only person that is willing to address pro video applications for Synology. Crazy – right ?b. But more importantly, we’re trying to find a storage system (we need about 48TB of working space) that can easily support 3 (maybe 4 in the future) concurrent editors on Mac and PC (but we can switch to Mac if needed). The odd thing is, if we look at the costs of SNS or Jellyfish, the costs are exorbitantly higher than Synology systems for virtually the same specs on paper. We have in-house IT that would set up the raid system, but it unnerving that I’ve seen maybe 3 videos on Synology for video editors and as @bob_zelin pointed out, there isn’t any advertisement for media houses on the Synology site or in the forums. All editors are working with 1080p ProRes 422, one editor consistently works with ProRes 4k 422 on a 1080p timeline, but we want to prepare for all 3 (maybe 4) to be able to edit mixed 1080p and 4k simultaneously.
REPLY – there are many Synology products that can do this, and there are many QNAP products that can do this. And it has recently been pointed out that the new ProMax Mediahub can do this as well. A typical QNAP product that can do exactly what you want is the QNAP TVS-872XT which is $1799 (not including the eight drives). And Synology has plenty of products that can do this as well. Your in house IT department will have no clue as how to make this happen. I know how to do it, as does ProMax, SNS, Lumaforge, and plenty of other people. Your in house IT department does not know how to do this.
Any input would be of great help as we out to sea on if this is a viable option for us!

replies below –I’m on the cusp of purchasing a QNAP TVS-872XT for our small production studio and have a quick question. We have public wifi with good download (>150mbps) but slow (~5mbps) upload speeds and no access to a hard-line network connection.
REPLY – the TVS-872XT is a very nice product. You are about to ask questions about Upload/Download. Even with Verizon Fios, you get crappy upload/download speeds.
Now, you may ask, “well, what if I had $60,000 to spend on a better system – would I get better upload/download speeds from my internet provider”. Simple answer – NO.
And to take this one step further. I have the worst horrible Spectrum Cable internet connection – and even I get 10 Mb/sec upload. You are doomed.I can connect the NAS to our router/modem at home to get it setup and configured, but I would like to be able to setup the NAS to make regular cloud backups and occasionally access it remotely. Is connecting it to the internet as simple as buying a USB dongle (i.e. the ASUS USB-AC51 Dual Band Wireless AC600 Wi-Fi Adapter)? Or do I need to do something more involved? I know the NAS has an open PCIE slot to add a QNAP wi-fi adapter card, but I plan on using that to add a second 10G port.
REPLY – The correct router for any network attached storage system is the Synology RT2600ac.
You connect this to your WAN connection (your cable modem) and then you have both WiFi, and wired internet access. This product is $199. If you say “$199 – oh my God – we can’t afford $199” – well, I will have to fly to your location and kill you. It’s that simple. Getting tortured in prison, and eventually killed will be better than having to have someone that can’t spend $199 to make a living.Also, if anyone has any insight/advice on setting up a cloud backup of an NAS, please feel free to share. I figure backing up large video files is going to take forever, especially with those slow upload speeds (I’m going to talk to our IT guy to see if there’s anything that could speed it up), but we’re not shooting every day, so if it takes a few days to backup a shoot—but then we have an off-site backup—that’s better than not having an off-site backup.
REPLY – if you have IT guys, then why ask here ? There is no miracle to “speed things up”. You get a faster internet connection. It’s as simple as that. The QNAP will have direct links to things like
Google Drive, Dropbox, Backblaze B2, Amazon AWS, and plenty of others, and its FREE. But even for free, you STILL have to pay for a decent upload speed, or the entire thing is useless.
That means, that if you give your money to QNAP, or Synology or LumaForge, or Facilis or EditShare or AVID, or GB Labs or anyone else, and you STILL wont’ pay for a decent internet connection – well, you are screwed.As for off site backup – if you buy a second QNAP (oh no !) – the software is built into the QNAP to go from QNAP 1 to QNAP 2 (the backup system) – and that is free. You know what is not free ?

yup. Same with Puget Systems, and HP Z4. Both nice (and of course, the custom gaming computers at a similar price).
I still think the new Mac Pro would be ok, IF they charged $5999 and it could do at least what an iMac Pro could do for that $5999. But of course, it can’t. So these PC’s just look great.

you have not stated what your computer is, what 10G adaptor you are using on your computer, or in the Synology. You have not stated what your switch is.
You have not stated how you formatted your Synology.The secret to setting up a QNAP, Synology, Netgear ReadyNas or even the new ProMax MediaHub is knowing how do it. These are not plug and play systems. And this of course applies to your computers with 10G adaptors, your 10G switches, etc.

oh my God – I just had this exact thing happen.
A guy emails me, and says “when would it be convenient to have a phone meeting with you” ?
His contact info and company was on the email, including his CEL #.
I called him within 2 minutes. Left a message. Emailed him and said “I am always available – whenever is convenient for you – including right now”. No response. I called him and emailed him the next day. No response.SO, why did he contact me in the first place ?
and just to keep complaining (about Millenials) – this is what I observe.
They contact you. You call them, and you get “this mailbox is full and cannot accept any messages”. You email them, and no reply (because after all – who looks at emails anymore ? !!!).
The ONLY way to reach them is by texting them, and then they reply. WHAT IS THAT !Bob Zelin
