buy a used Mac Pro $1000. Craigslist.
update it to OS X 10.10 or OS X 10.11 (free)
buy three SATA drives (you choose the size). Shove them in the Mac Pro sleds. I believe that 3TB SATA drives are about $110 each, so buy 2 of those, RAID 0 in the OS, and buy a single 6TB to back up to.
You are using free editing software (Resolve 12).So your total expense will be $1500 – $1600.
If you do not have this budget to edit a 4K movie, I suggest working some extra shifts at McDonnalds to save up some more money.

simple answer – no.
Better answer – use a Mac Mini as a server, connect your Pegasus R8 or G-Tech Studio XL to this, as well as a thunderbolt to 10G dual port adaptor, and now you have exactly what you want.Or get a NAS, like e QNAP or Sinology with a minimum of 8 drives and multiple ports on the back of the QNAP.
But can you just plug in 2 computers to the Pegasus, or anything else ? No.
And before Accusys responds, YES, Accusys sells what you want – plug in your 2 thunderbolt cables and you are sharing. It will take up to 3 computers, no expansion – $10,000.

the Mac Mini will work. A loaded (not bare bones) Mac Mini will cost $1000 – $1100 with 16 gig of RAM.
You will have to put your 10G thunderbolt box AND your drive array on the same single buss on the Mac Mini, so you will not get the performance that you would with a cylinder Mac Pro that has 3 busses (or an old Mac Pro that has separate lanes for the PCIe cards). Will the Mac Mini work – absolutely. We do it all the time.
Will you get better performance with a Mac Pro – yes.Is the Mac Mini WAY cheaper ? – 1/3″ the price of a new cylinder Mac Pro, but the same price as a used

you have brought up an excellent analogy with the band stuff. So today, unless you are a “star” or
have corporate contracts to play convention jobs (or are in the small circle of NY/LA Studio musicians), you are not going to make a living. And it only gets worse, as “great sounds” are now available when you plug your guitar/keyboard into an iMac with a plug in that makes your instrument sound like it’s going thru a big Marshall Amp or heavy Hammond Organ. Not the real thing ? Most people don’t care – it’s good enough (just like the cheap cameras or iPhone today).SO – this happened to the Print industry. There are still print houses out there, but only the very super hi end. Everyone else prints themselves -because it is good enough.
Same applies to photography. How many still photographers can make a living, compared to just before Canon released the 5D, and started the downward spiral.
Same with audio recording. How many recording studios are there, that can survive ? While audio for post houses thrive in LA, most of the music recording studios are gone – because you can do it at home, not only with a toy, but a small pro tools system that costs almost nothing (not to mention Cake Walk, etc, etc).
So while Skywalker Sound is still in business, most can’t make a living doing this.And we are next. The next George Lucas won’t point his iPhone at actors to make a feature film. But most of “our work” on this forum is from corporate events, corporate training, web videos, presentation videos, low budget documentaries, and a handful of TV shows and commercials. The “big” jobs will continue to use the expensive gear (and the expensive personnel), but the vast majority of people doing this for a living, will not be able to survive 15 years from now, because “everyone” can edit, “everyone” can shoot, because “everyone” has their own YouTube Channel – after all, it was a required course in High School, and now “everyone” can do it (and the iPhone, or GoPro, or whatever is out 10 – 15 years from now) – will be REAL GOOD !
You are a writer, with a pen and paper ? Try getting into a network to write a comedy or drama, and make a living with it. Try to get funding for your great script for that fantastic feature you just wrote. Good luck.

why is it your responsibility to setup the QNAP ? Why is the editor the one who is supposed to figure this out ?The QNAP (depending on the model that you own) will work perfectly fine for this. You can use .smb or .afp to connect (just keep your libraries local) and reference the media that lives on the QNAP, or enable NFS, and then you can keep your libraries on the QNAP (write and create libraries on the QNAP).
It troubles me when a company says “here is this box, go figure it out”. That’s not the way it works, and this should not be your problem.

if SSDs lasted forever, and would not fail, and were not “breakable”, they would offer lifetime
warrantee’s (like many switch manufacturers offer these days. Why not offer lifetime warrantee’s for SSD’s – there are no moving parts ? How could they fail ?Well, they do fail, and if you feel that losing your data, and pissing off your clients is worth getting 10% more speed with RAID 0, then go right ahead and use RAID 0. In my opinion, if you even lose ONE client because you lost your data, every penny you saved is down the toilet (and then some).

has WHAT been tested ? There is no such thing as a Thunderbolt switch. It does not exist.
Accusys has a Thunderbolt shared storage system. It starts with 64 TB, and requires some computer (like a Mac Mini running Apple XSAN) to be the Metadata manager. This Mac Mini takes up one of the four ports available, leaving THREE thunderbolt ports that you can connect three Apple Thunderbolt based computers, to have shared storage for these three computers.There is no way to add a forth or more thunderbolt computers. There is no Thunderbolt switch.
How fast is it ? Very fast – I believe its over 800 MB/sec (RED 6K requires only 143 MB/sec).
The Accusys system is $10,000 for 64 TB. This does not include the Mac Mini (or similar) for the Metadata manager. You can also use Tiger Technology Tiger Share as the software instead of Apple XSAN.

“the settings recommended by ATTO are the same you might use on these HDDs?”what hard disk drives ? You can be using drives from Seagate, HGST, WD, Toshiba, enterprise or desktop. You are going to get the same performance, and degradation of performance as your array starts to get full. Just wait till you are 90% full. You will see even worse performance.
Exactly what can’t you do with 1100 MB/sec anyway ?

there are no tweeks. This happens with the Areca and the Highpoint card as well. You are not going to keep 100% performance with an almost full drive array. Your results is what I see everywhere, with every card.
