I started a thread on the m100 forum the other day on this very topic. Turns out, it’s not as simple as just exporting out a quicktime with a different codec – the field order and color space have to be adjusted for. Floh suggests an interesting solution using after effects…

The light bulb finally turned on! Thanks Floh – I think I owe you more than a couple beers for all the help you’ve given all these years. I’ll try your method and let you know.

    Hi Floh,
Thanks for the response. Forgive my confusion here – when you say move it down one pixel do you mean moving the image position down one in the composition? What affect does that have on the fields? And you say I should interpret as full frame – do you mean switching the field order to “none” – and you say to render without fields – does that mean I’m losing the interlacing?
    Thanks!

Thanks for your help, guys. So, if I exported the timelines out to AE, could I then output them as DVCPRO50 and work around the colorspace and field order problem?

The way I interpret it, Apple is saying that you should do it that way for “optimal” performance, specifically with FCP. If you do mix up the ram, I don’t think they’re saying it won’t work – you just might be missing out on a bit of performance. I recently went through this process myself and decided to shelve my 512 sticks and go with a pair of 2gb for a total of 4gb. OWC has great prices, and as someone said, they do offer a trade-in policy.
    Good Luck!

    Grinner,
I feel your pain. I’m in exactly the same position. I’m 44, and have spent my entire adult life working my ass off in this craft to do the best work I possibly could. Like you, I also shoot and produce, and know how hard it is to work for people who don’t share your commitment to the craft. It does seem like in recent years, the projects that have come my way have been worse and worse. The days of having an experienced, talented producer come to me with a box of well-shot tapes, prepared to hunker down and collaborate on a piece that we can all be proud of seem to be over. In my world (mid to upper-mid level corporate) things have really gotten bad. I sometimes worry that all this crappy work is hurting my abilities – that maybe you become so compromised you forget how to do good work.

Editing is hard work – really hard. I find myself less and less able to put in long days on uninspiring projects. When I was younger, we used to joke, “well, it beats digging ditches!”, but lately it’s beginning to feel alot like I am digging ditches.

I sometimes think that, maybe, before I get too old, I should fire all my clients and start over. So far, I haven’t had to guts to do it, so my hat’s off to you. Best of luck and let us know how you do!

Here’s an article from DV that has good information about configuring a FCP system for HD:

    Tom,
I made the switch about 9 months ago and have been delighted with FCP. I don’t know if I can answer your questions specifically, since FC offers so many options. A blessing and a curse, I suppose. The Cow is a fantastic resource that has helped me enormously navigating this change. One thing that made the switch much easier for me was to create a custom keyboard layout that allowed me to replicate the keyboard shortcuts I was used to. In just a month or so I’d say I was just as fast on FC as I was on Media 100.

I recently bought a Kona LHe, which I haven’t installed yet. So far I’ve been working in DV, using the deck as my interface. If I want a higher quality codec (for compositing) I simply drop the sequence (or clips) into a new sequence at DV50 codec (4:2:2). Firewire 800 drives have been adequate so far, but like you I’m trying to decide on a sata array. Love to hear back on what you decide on that front.
    Good Luck!

I believe that this is a limitation of the deck. I don’t have experience using it with an Avid, but I did use it for years with my Media 100, and not being able to insert or assemble means that it simply isn’t frame accurate, with the rs422 or firewire. I’d be delighted to find out that I’m wrong about that.
