Wide angle lenses usually distort images by progressively tilting an image as the distance from the center of an image increases. It will, for example, show buildings in the center of the image as upright while buildings toward the left or right sides of the image tilt to the left or right. I could not see your video since I am unwilling to agree to someone’s terms of service just to see a sample video, so I could not confirm if what I just described is what you are talking about.
However, it does look like Vegas has the ability to correct the distortion which I described. There is an Fx called Deform which will allow you to deform a video image in many ways. One kind of deformation pulls the top portion of the image together. That is what you need to do to correct the tilt which I described. Have a look. It may well do what you need to do.

I was not around in the old days, but, from what I have heard here and there, I suspect trimmers have their source in tape based machines. A section of tape would be snipped out, and merged (taped together) with a bunch of other sections of tape. People who learned to edit on such machines learned to think of that procedure as the normal thing to do. NLE editors have obviated the need for such things, but old habits sometimes die hard.

Although you use it all the time, from my perspective, it is still a niche need. I don’t even use an Apple machine because a Windows environment still does EVERYTHING that I want to do.

All media dies. Especially optical media which is not burned to professional standards by professional equipment. My backups these days include two hard drives plus images burned to two different formulations of optical disk. I don’t have the numbers, but my guess is that four independent sources are MUCH LESS likely to fail than one set of optical disks.

Then again, the need for multiple scenarios is probably quite limited. If it was a widespread need, Vegas would have lost out long ago. The question is whether a complete revision of the software’s concept of organization and operation is a good use of resources for a niche need. As for myself, I have never noticed the need to nest projects, and I prefer the KISS approach to software design.

While this will not solve your problem, there is a way forward. Drop subclips. I don’t use them, and consider them a remnant of an older technology which, by necessity, had other ways of doing things. That older technology’s approach is simply not needed in an NLE. I simply drag an event to the time line, and begin working. If I need to cut out a section of the “event” (or clip), I simply split it in the middle of the section being discarded and drag the edges in so that the unwanted portion is eliminated on the time line. I then move the remaining portions of the clip to eliminate the gaps. If I later decide that I want to restore some of the “deleted” material, I expand the events so that the desired material can be seen once more.
The only reason I use the trimmer is to preview a file to see what is on it.

John, I think he meant that the port on the camera is probably dead. However, it is a good thought to check the cable itself although the probability is that the port is dead.

Other than a possible unauthorized use of Vegas, I do not see any Vegas issues in what you posted. I am curious though. Just how did your friend “help” you get Vegas 9? Normally, you simply pay Sony, download the software, and install it. After you pay, Sony gives you a valid serial number so that you can activate Vegas. After that, there are no issues with unauthorized use.

That does make sense. I was lucky to have it emphasized to me that you ALWAYS turn off all power before making or disconnecting a firewire connection. Even then, I have lost a firewire port on one of my external drives. Fortunately, the camera is still alive.

SVP 12 does not capture HDV interfacing via firewire. I have an XH-A1 that records to tape, and outputs to firewire using its DV output port. SVP dropped the ability to capture this output somewhere along the way. I now use HDVSplit to capture video from the camera. If the camera is turned on in play mode, HDVSplit finds it. Once the camera is found, I have to press the capture button in HDVSplit twice. The first time, it does not capture anything. The second time, the tape is successfully captured. I use the 0.77 beta of HDVSplit, and, since it works, I have not attempted to upgrade it.
