Yes, hard drives do fail. However, I have not had a failure in over 5 yr. Since I gave up on using scsi drives, I have not really had drive issues. When the solid state drives come down in price, they will be a good option. Burning disks is certainly a good option as well. I keep my important footage on three drives and on some disks and from way back on Beta SP tape. That 4 gig issue is “bite.”

Forget composite out. It’s horrible. Component out will require three connectors, but it will give you close to 800 lines of rez. There are some specialty cables out there for the EX1. It comes with a mini usb to RCA component cable.

Blu-ray rendered video looks great. As far as data backup, I haven’t really tried it much. Mostly, because hard drives are so inexpensive these days. Plus, I have yet to have a client that will let me send them EX1 footage on disk. They all want hard drives.

There are actually three focus modes. Full Manual, Manual Focus, and Auto Focus. In Manual Focus mode there is the option (in the cam menu) to add a MF Assist function. Perhaps that was on, and it slightly over or undershot the scene. I have seen it do weird things in low light.

I think Sony and Panasonic are putting more effort toward the larger sensor camcorders. I’m waiting for the next round of those built in more of an ENG style.

I would agree with what Craig said. I think the EX1 is a very flexible and reliable camcorder. It has so many control features and is easy to use, once you learn how it works. Be sure to dive into the manual. The other thing I would suggest is updating to the latest firmware. Currently, that is v. 1.26 (EX1). If you go the sdhc route, I would look at the websites of the adapter manufacturers. They have tested many cards and will have recommendations for you. If you have the budget, SXS would be a safer approach. If you do go with sdhc/sdxc, again I would recommend the firmware upgrade. Have a Sony authorized center do this for you. Good luck.

Update. I just got the EX1 back from Macie Video and everything seems great. Updated to V. 1.26 for $175. BTW, FedEX two day ground was a good shipping option.
