Is there a tutorial that gives “just enough” Illustrator orientation for the video editor?

In my case, AI would be most pertinent for text builds (to create text that I could use at any resolution), and for tracing, to transform jpeg’s of client logos into vector art.

Not that this will help Al, because he describes a pretty minimal set of tools, but what is the “right way” to do this? Is this the car-on-a-platform situation, complete with lights on outriggers to simulate oncoming headlights, passing streetlights, etc.?

I’d be curious also as to what the experts here think would help Al, with basically no instruments and perhaps not enough budget to do it the “right way.” — because that sorta describes me. My meager advice, Al, is that you should turn your lack of lights into a “naturalistic” asset — set a minimal level and let it go at that. Perhaps shoot at late-dusk or early-dawn so the outside has some detail.

I love this thread. Certainly, the china ball sounds beautiful. And in the spirit of your long boom… a low cart attached with outriggers to your dolly, following the person and carrying a low backlight; or just shoot it in the studio against greenscreen and composite.

I wish someone could find this: I think I saw a production still for the (1st?) movie of “Sex and the City” of the four gorgeous women striding along a Manhattan sidewalk. Lights/scrims/reflectors the length of the block – or am I misremembering?

Must be some kind of problem with the basic technology of video – I’ve had that with all sorts of video cameras. Wait, I’ve had it with film cameras too.

Precisely the one. Now to persuade the creator to discuss how he did it. Have you explored these kinds of techniques? I really like the idea of tracking the real world along with particles. It transforms them from “cool” to “magic.”

Speaking of the admonition to “turn your cellphone off,” has anyone else noticed the “new rudeness” of texting? There’s something about receiving a text that changes the dynamic.

I’m not talking only about crew members, but people in general, at work and at play. Including me!!!

Many people will apologize if they have to interrupt a social interaction to TALK on the cellphone. But those same individuals will happily receive and send texts without any word of explanation, standing there, still nominally part of the conversation (albeit distractedly) yet texting away madly. It’s as if the non-verbal nature of texting makes them believe that they can be in two mental places at once. As I said before – I do it too.

I wish there were a way that cellphones/PDAs could signal “true emergency” as opposed to “yet another text/call.” As it is now, many people who will allow voicemail to pick up a cellphone call will immediately check every text that arrives. (yeah… and I do it too.)

Hi Mimi,

Voice recognition software is rampant in the wider world. Dragon Naturally Speaking continues to improve, and there are undoubtedly many more programs.

More interesting to me is transcription from files, a feature of Adobe’s Premiere Pro. I can’t tell you how well it works; the APP forum may be a better place to explore that option.
