Maybe someone can tell me whether I was imagining this. Stuck overnight at JFK Airport a number of years ago, I happened to be sitting at one of those then-new-fangled AT&T telephones when (I believe) its internal memory was polled and rebooted. You could actually see on the little LCD screen what appeared to be hard drive information, and though I can’t swear to it because I was so surprised (and tired), the drive i.d. numbers looked VERY familiar to me, having sat through many a boot-up of my discreet edit* system.

More to the point…

David, how do you tell enterprise-level drives from consumer — is it just a matter of the warranty?

I think I had one bad run a while ago, and I think they were Ushio, but I’ve had many Ushio since that were fine. But I think “bad runs” must be common, because the lamp supplier agreed with no argument to replace them all.

Related question: that one “bad lot” of bulbs still is in the back of my mind whenever I shoot out of town, so I take 3-4 replacement bulbs for every fixture, usually not needing any. I don’t want to pack any fewer, but I’m just curious: how many replacement bulbs (tungsten/fluorescent/HMI) do most people pack for, say, a three-day shoot?

The biggest danger to my bulbs has been people who invert a lit fixture or knock into a light.

Using eDVD4, I’ve been following the advice in Alex Alexzander’s COW tutorial for eDVD3: make the timeline that launches the DVD-ROM content four seconds long, with the second (launch) chapter at two seconds in.

My enhanced DVDs play fine on PCs, but I’d like to make them work on Macs. I’d like to know more precisely what you mean by the above advice: If the whole clip is 7-10 seconds long, is the “trigger” or second chapter point still supposed to come at two seconds in? And, if the clip is now 7-10 seconds long, does that have any bad effect on the playback in PCs?

The problem I have with AE’s Color Stabilizer is that it only stabilizes a portion of the image at a time. I am thinking of running CS several times — what do you think of that approach?

Thanks. “Synchronization” would definitely be applicable to the video portion that I first asked about. But the project (for a small museum) has just grown to include audio and tv monitors with clips from actual old radio and tv shows, etc. I’d be using some of these clips in a video, but clearance for this other use will also be needed.

What about finding someone to help me negotiate the rights to copyrighted materials, for both the video and exhibit displays?

The reason I used Return to Last Menu was that I have three timelines (three separate encoded MPEG files), elements of which are spread out over four menus. In Timeline #2, some chapters are referenced by Menu 1, and others by Menu 2. Since the Menu Button is programmed by Timeline, not Chapter, using Return to Last Menu at least got the viewer closer to the desired spot. Am I on the right track here, do you think?

More-experienced shooters, a related question: for the run of typical lamps that we use in our Peppers, small fresnels, and 1K or less open faces: are there lamp manufacturers that you avoid?
