I love the way this thread has developed. When I posted my question, I wasn’t asking about how to fake a credential; I wanted to know whether there was some way a freelancer could get some piece of paper that would recognize his/her status. But I’m glad that the creative people on this forum shared their exploits.

The era of the fake credential has probably passed. I suspect that the best approach is honesty: “Ma’am, as a freelancer I don’t get a general credential; they’re issued at the venue where we shoot. But do you honestly think I’d be carrying all this s-, um, ‘stuff’ if I didn’t have to?”

I can see why that would be a cherished memory.

Did you ever see the piece on some news magazine about the relatively older gentleman who had gone to every Super Bowl in memory, usually into the locker rooms as well, and never had a ticket or a press pass? The acid test was going to be the New Orleans game after 9/11 I believe, where the Superdome was circled with barbed wire and National Guardsmen

And he walked past the soldiers, and as someone exited one of those doors with no knobs on the outside, he slipped right in.

Of course, after reading your story, I realize that the fact that he had a professional video crew tailing him is probably how he got past the National Guard. But you have to give him credit for figuring that out too.

Absolutely, and I thought that would be enough too, but my cameras are 5 megapixels, and so I can’t really pan and zoom all that much. It does help with the reframing though, because it’s hard to predict the “good parts.” And zooming and pan still seems sort of flat — like zooming and panning stills in After Effects. I would love to add the fluidity of a move to the timelapse.

One of my favorite cartoons from a certain magazine that used to seem risque, when I saw this in 1965: two businessmen sitting on a park bench, as a perfectly gorgeous, perfectly nude young woman walks by. One businessman says to the other, “I bet she’d be a knockout in a bathing suit.”

At age 11 I thought that was weird. Now…

As for the lighting question, since everybody goes for suggestive low light, try suggestive high key: let this happen in a room with sunlight blasting away in broad venetian-blind stripes, completely overexposing various areas.

Great idea, Steve. I’m doing the #1 plus the Roberts-Render procedure and it works great, although I’d prefer one step of course.

Next time I hope to have more room on the drives so I can avoid editing HDV.

Laura, not sure what you are doing, but I may have seen a great answer to your question. You may want to try an After Effects forum.

I found it in a non COW AE forum — can’t recall where. The writer was running a big Hollywood fix-it and special effects shop, and told how he created a convention to deal with the myriad of filenames by all of the departments in his studio. It was VERY disciplined, and the names were pretty long.

It was so thorough that you could have shuffled all of the files in his shop, put them back together again, and they would land in the exact same place every time.

I wish I could recall the person’s name for you.

Whether hidden in a wig or custom sewn into the garment, is the mic bedded in something?

I can’t seem to get the hang of hiding a lav effectively. Whenever I’ve tried to “protect” the mic from clothing rustle I’ve gotten a muffled effect. Even concealing the mic inside a collar makes for a sound that to me seems unnatural.

I haven’t used eDVD for a long time, so I’m rusty, and I hope someone smarter sees your question.

But in case no one else replies: my problem turned out to be totally simple — no DVD player had been installed on the computer.

IA still needs some “base” DVD player, I guess. So try installing a DVD player.

Hope this helps — I bet it doesn’t.

I often see two catchlights in the eyes too, and as long as one is much more pronounced than the other, I like it. I think it looks livelier, often. Depending on heavy brows, etc.

What is the “butterfly” effect, John?
