Some of us have more work than others. It’s just human nature to own our success, and blame our problems on the environment. Sometimes, that is even true. Sometimes it’s an excuse. You can’t generalize. The best of us and the worst of us can succeed or fail, either because of our own talents or despite our weaknesses. That’s not to say, Don’t work hard — it’s just to say, Have some humility when you’re successful, and don’t necessarily get down on yourself when you’re not.

What got our country into this economic mess? It’s because too many people started judging their own self-worth on the basis of their place in society. Some of us got jealous of those neighbors who made a fortune by flipping their house, or by investing with that genius Madoff, or of people who got huge bonuses by selling shaky mortgages.

My late father-in-law, boatbuilder and wonderful, gentle man, enjoyed racing sailboats. Occasionally he would observe one of us peering anxiously astern or ahead at the rest of the fleet, and he would say, “Sail your own boat.”

That’s really all you can do, isn’t it?

Exposing my ignorance, here, Dave, but let me try to refine my question.

I don’t care whether the data shows up within the video-DVD experience. (The only time that happened with eDVD was when the user played the DVD in a computer, anyway.) I would like the user to be able to insert the DVD in a conventional DVD player, and see the menu and video.

I would also like the user to be able to insert the DVD into a computer, and be able to override the auto-play DVD player, and access the data, i.e., the Windows Media, Quicktime, MPEG versions of the video.

Are you saying, cake, for the latter need?

I agree with your caution about using eDVD.

The first time I became aware of editing was watching news cameramen shooting interviews – first the interviewee, then turning around and shooting the questions – and how sometimes the q&a got confused in the editing room. Good old CP 16’s, single system.

[Rick Wise] “As was pointed out in another post a while back, putting a squeezer (variac or other dimmer) on your hair light and placing the control by the camera allows you to vary the intensity quickly. Just remember that when you dim down a tungsten unit, it warms up, color-temperature wise. Like almost everything else in this biz, there are trade-offs to consider.”

Dimmer-by-the-camera is a great time-saving idea, but some bulbs (including those for the Omni) tend to buzz when dimmed. My fresnels (Mole and Pepper) seem to take dimming without buzzing — usually.

Dennis, do you ever get into on-lens filtration?

When I was making a series of videos about retirement communities I used a coral filter on the lens for all scenes involving people. It worked beautifully — of course I did all white balancing without the filter on. But those old people (hmmm… some of them don’t seem so old anymore) looked great.

I can see one advantage of filtering the key vs. the lens: if you filter the key then you can create greater color contrast by filtering the other lights for contrast. If you filter the lens itself, you overlay the whole scene with that tint, diluting the impact?

Or does that constitute overthinking?

I have to say it sounds like you have the “funnest job.”

Are these dips to black covering an edit which would otherwise be a jump cut? (that is, the image size is the same in both shots.)

If the cuts will flow as cuts, use straight edits. If they’re jump cuts, don’t worry so much about it. It seems that it is okay nowadays to throw in jump cuts. I’ll sometimes use jumps, dips to almost-white, quick dissolves, and push wipes, all in the same piece.

But I’m with Grinner about dips to black. Not sure why this is, but perhaps they somehow read as being full of meaning, and if they really are not, the viewer feels abused.
