There are many compromises with a zoom lens.

The advantages of a GOOD prime lens are thus
Typically faster as in lets more light in, a zoom might be f4 or 3.5 a prime might be f1.4
Much sharper, much much sharper this is the greatest advantage. The sharpness is such that things in the plane of focus are not only sharper with a prime but things in front of and behind the plane of focus have a quality that seems to accentuate the plane that is in focus, its as if there is much more detail to the out of focus planes.
    Smaller and lighter
Smaller filters and matte box, depending selection

With that said, even big budget feature films with well known DPs slap on a zoom and shoot. This happens for various reasons more often its a speed issue. I would also say laziness but that would get me in trouble.

Strange as it may sound even top of the top DPs take jobs on films they don

I agree, did anyone notice the forest as we were inspecting the trees? I think we all appreciate the value of a deep technical analysis but there is a balance which I miss. Real world footage on several cameras would be extremely revealing. Speaking just for myself, there are many things that go into choosing one piece of equipment over another and the tech specs can easily be overwhelmed by non technical issues.

It is my guess that most of us have a feel for what will work for us best. For me, as an example, HDV has no place in my planning if a cable company like any of the Discovery networks refuse to allow it on any of their show, that solves the HDV conundrum for me.

I so wish I could see a CU of a persons face (a pretty woman) light to justify a table light etc, 10 seconds, that

I remember when he had a sence of humor BEFORE he became a LEADER, now, I guess things change when you move up and become somebody. But I remember when.

As I remember, there are some little photo batteries that slip into a compartment in every camera that can be associated with providing constant power to that part of the recorder that needs constant time of day stuff. Is there one in your camera, is it fresh? This is just a hazzy guess but, what would life be like with out a few guesses?

As for a preexisting tape with timecode breaks, I just dub those tapes to a new tape with a constant timecode, life is too short.

So much for respecting our intelligence!

I smell a rat. Put another way, I think you have been encouraged to take the information away for who knows what reason.

Let the information flow, we will get it eventually, why not here, why not now?
