In case anyone cares I did some further research and found the answer in the AE bible “Creating Motion GRFX with AE” by the Meyers.
“Whether you set the end keyframes manually or use the write on mode, the stroke itself will retain all the inherent timing nuances (speed ups and slow downs) or your hands movements”.
Hopefully Adobe will correct this issue in future editions of AE if they havent already (I’m using 6.5).

Thnx for the advice. I moved all of the associated media files and project to seperate locations and was able to atleast open the project without it freezing up. None of my media was linked but atleast I was able to open it! Then I just simply closed after effects and moved everything back to its original location and when I reopened my project it was as good as new with all media linked again. This process seemed to fix whatever weird little bug was causing the freeze up problem. It doesnt make any sense but the important thing is it worked!

Hey Jaymen, thanx for looking into this. Chris and I were just talking about this problem today. Unfortunately neither of the suggestions here worked for opening my corrupt project (luckily there wasnt too much work to recreate in another new project) but it would be nice to know for future reference. From now on it looks like incremental saving is the way to go.
    Thanx- Matt

Yeah, I had already tried searching the archives and while I found that numerous people have had this same problem no answers were ever given about how to actually recover a project once it comes up with this error message.
I did however find a good piece of old advice from you however about “incrimental saving” (saving your project every so often under a different name so you can revert back to an earlier version should something like this ever happen). I’ve done hundreds of projects in AE over the past 5 years and have never ever experienced anything like this until now but it is definatley a good piece of advice especialy when working on really big projects that you have put hours/days/weeks/months into!
