    Perfect! I think I knew that at some point…but I forget little things like that when I haven’t used it in awhile.

    Thanks again Dan you’re the best!

  • Thanks Dan, that worked just fine. Weird that you have to round the number to add it to a string…

    Thanks again,

    January 15, 2013 at 8:03 pm in reply to: Video Card Question for AE users

    My current PC has the following specs:

    Intel Xeon CPU X5675 @ 3.07GHz 3.06GHz (2 processors – 12 cores)
    24 GB Ram
    64bit Operating System

    NVIDIA Quadro 4000 PCI bus 3

    We primarily work with AE and C4D, and recently Element for AE. We also use Maya, Lightwave, Blender, and Premiere (Depending on the artist, various products are used.). We work in a variety of resolutions, some extreme sizes such as 4HD signals wide or high. Our typical work is primarily motion graphics, but we do a lot of 3D previs work too.

    We were hoping that amping up the video card would allow us to get a less beafy PC.

    The pc we are testing on has these specs:

    Intel Xeon CPU E5=1620 0 @ 3.60GHz 3.60GHz (8 cores)
    32 GB of ram
    64 bit Operating System

    With one of the video cards mentioned previously.

  • Can this work in an expression or just a script?yourComp.openInViewer();
    app.executeCommand(app.findMenuCommandId("Trim Comp to Work Area"));

    I am setting up a template Comp for creating previews in and would like the Comp to either change to a specified layers length, or set the work area to that layers out point automatically. This usually gets overlooked and the previews end up with blank frames at the end, or the content gets cut short. Only need this if it can work as an expression.

    Also how do you write this correctly? I’ve tried several variations with no luck. thisComp.layer("myComp").Duration; I was trying to change the source text of a text layer as a visual to prompt the user to update the comp length.

    Yes!!!…got something, it returns a number. I think I can use that and just set up an if statement. I was hoping for the actual text, but I think I can make due with that.

    Thanks Dan!

    Dan, That works perfectly! Not sure if you’ve ever heard this, but… Dan you are the man!

    I’m fairly new to this so your help is greatly appreciated. If you have time could you breifly explain what the differences are in the two lines of code. Why one works and why the other one failed so miserably. I think it would help us newbies tremendously.

    Thanks again Dan,

  • I’ve noticed the same issue on my work PC. I don’t have invig, but I do have AE 7.0. I’ve noticed that unless I restart AE during the day, eventually my ram is consumed. Initially I can preview about a min. then, like you mentioned, I can only preview seconds. If I continue to use AE eventually I’m unable to view even one one frame (it usually crashes before this point though). I think AE 7.0 is the culprate in this case.
