Of course you can build your own bars & tone. We’ve all had to do that. Not needed for spots but every long form broadcast & film distributor deliverable that I have encountered has required them in the slating info. That’s not the point. Someone said it is “petty” to worry about bars & tone. But, seriously, how much programming time would it take for them to be added to FCP X? In four years? I guess I am the only editor on the planet that needs to use them. Oh well, FVP X is good for some things, not so good for others- just like MC & PPro which I also use.

So, so easy. Yet in four years they haven’t figured out a way to add them to Generators?

Are bars & tone available in Generators yet?

The interesting thing to me is that FCP X is no longer “new” software- it is three years old. So those that say it just takes a while to add back basic features which were present in FCP 7…really?

My point is simply that companies that try to innovate by creating things that “the customer doesn’t even know they want” are not always successful in that endeavor. The Model T was a success- created by the same company that creates the Edsel. The jury is still out on X.

And then there was the Edsel..,

Thanks to all of you that responded! Unfortunately, the audio did not sync- probably due to the fact that the on set audio playback is of very low quality, not to mention that there are repeated shouted instructions from the director while the camera is rolling. Also, all of the takes are of different sections of the complete track- there is no master shot that encompasses the entire length of the song.

At this point, I am stacking and syncing manually in FCP 7 as it is the only way that I can get this scene cut. This was all shot on the Red BTW.

However, this does bring me to another question. I have several scenes with eight tracks of audio- six tracks of lavs from individual actors plus a stereo pair from the boom. Does anybody know if FCP X will handle eight tracks of audio?

Again, thanks for everyone’s help- the Cow is awesome.

    Mark,

Thanks for the input. That’s exactly how I would do it in FCP 7.

The thing that has me stumped right now is that all of the camera runs are not complete takes of the song. In other words, some of them start in the middle of the song, etc. And the actor lip syncs at different times in each take.

So I need to manually sync all of the takes to the final music track and I’m not sure how to do that in FCP X.

Having not purchased nor experimented with FCP X yet, my knowledge comes only from having read numerous comments on this forum. I AM intrigued by the idea of FCP X’s metadata capabilities.

Now that I have seen your screen capture of (I may be wrong- I am assuming here) a window displaying metadata at the clip level, where would I add “Scene 104, A, Take 6”? Is there an additional field available for these type of notations? And would I be able to search by entering “Scene 104” and find all clips affiliated with that scene?

If so, this could be a huge timesaver.

    “Never assume”…how right you are!

Oh well, I figured he could start to learn to edit on FCE- and I guess he can- just not with any raw HD footage I can let him play with.

    Thanks for your quick response!
