Do you know what is in the middle that converts AVCHD to a Morgan Avi? It may be able to handle similar consumer/ delivery codecs like H.264.
This is a bit less elegant but might work. If you have a professional output card you could hook a stream into the input of an AVCHD camera. Then simply record the stream. It’s not the best solution in the world but it might be acceptable for this wacky set up.
That’s really a shot in the dark but might be worth a try. I have the luxury of avoiding most AVCHD cameras.

What version of FCP studio are you running? I haven’t noticed artifacts with DVD Studio Pro encodes but I also don’t make many DVDs anymore. What is your SD source footage when you have the problems? I’m honestly curios not questioning your judgement.
When I was making a lot of DVDs we shot DVCam footage on the PD 170 and later XDCam footage on the EX 1. A lot of talking head pieces but a few training exercises with quite a bit of action. I was fairly new then so maybe I didn’t notice the artifacts. I always like to learn something new.

I’ve never had to stream something over 3G so i was intrigued by your question. I decided to do a little research and found this

I’m going to read it over lunch. It seems like it will help.

What setting were you using in compressor? DVD Best quality? If you are going to run it through compressor one of the DVD settings should take care of you. It will kick out an MPEG 2 file an AC3 audio file. You can get more fancy with it but there really is no need.
If you really want to know the bit rate time answer try this https://www.3ivx.com/support/calculator/index.html
For example. I plugged in 3500 Mb for 1 hour and 17 minutes. With audio set to 128 kbps. I got a max bit rate of 6079 kbps.
I usually allow DVD studio pro to compress my DVDs from their native format. I’ve always been happy with he results.

Now there’s a strange one. Well at least the idea that that problem could arise is now in my tool bag.

I feel like I say this a lot in this forum but trash your preferences and see if that helps. If not you may just need to do a reinstall of Final Cut.
Strange error though.

What did you originally shoot in? If it was originally progressive you shouldn’t have converted it to interlaced till you went to DVD.
Generally interlaced video will look “stripey” on computer monitors. Play the DVD in a DVD player and see if it still looks bad. You may need to recompress it with a different field dominance.

A few things
What were you settings on export out of Final Cut?
Did you know that you most likely can go straight to DVD studio without running it through compressor? If your video is in a non delivery format DVD studio pro can transcode it for you. (Think DV, DVCAM, Pro Ress NOT h.264)
Also the DVD Best 120 is two parts. An audio encode and a video encode. The video encode should kick out an MPEG-2 file. It seems like you know that but i just want to make sure you are putting both settings on your files.
As always trash preferences and try again before doing anything drastic. (This is always worth a try if nothing else.)

Greg Burke I think you mean Apple Marketing team…
Isn’t it the same thing?

What I don’t understand is if CatDV can provide a kludge to make it work why couldn’t Apple have it working out of the box
