I realize this is answered quite a few months afterwards, but it MAY help the next person who stumbles across this thread.

I’m creating a time-lapse for a 2-YEAR project – I’m snapping 14,000 DSLR images a month and needed something to do just that; ‘rename/renumber’ image files for processing my timelapse.

There is a product called ‘Siren’ and it’s free! (Don’t know why/where they came up with that name, none-the-less, it’s working out flawlessly!)

It actually looks at the image(s) meta-data and will rearrange ALL the images into proper-order by ‘date/time taken.’ One quick swoop then does it rename those files to file names appropriately. (i.e. My-project-image-001.jpg, MY-project-image0002.jpg, on down the entire list of 14,000 images.)
