I was imagining last night what it would be like to have an iPad the size of the Cinema Display I’m writing this on….
THAT would be an interesting editing platform, wouldn’t it?
And a dirt simple evolution of the “all in the display” iMac models popping off the assembly lines right now.

In China, pirates have now TOTALLY RIPPED OFF the Apple store. It’s actually a hoot. The pirates have made functional clone stores right down to the design, staff uniforms and the store graphics…

Show me ONE instance of anyone putting any effort into cloning a Microsoft store – and we’ll can re-open the discussion of how the world’s consumers have voted about a successful business model for computer retailing.
Yes, Microsoft still has an inarguably massive market shared driven by legacy practices of forcing anyone who wanted a PC to buy it with the MS-OS pre-installed. But innovation is not the same as commoditization.
The last “innovation” I can recall out of Redmond was the Surface thing. And when was the last time you saw one of those in the wild?

A fair point.
I did say “top” – but in the context that for many years, NOBODY at the top would consider, for example, using DV sourced material for broadcast … right up to the point where EVERYONE decided it was absolutely fine to do just that.
Do you remember when suddenly everyone from Brian Williams to Anderson Cooper started trotting around with hand-held DV cameras in far flung lands and putting their footage directly into “nightly news” packages – the precise same thing that all the “professionals” were arguing was akin to “amateur” the month prior.
Now, a solid percentage of news coverage originates on formats and equipment that broadcast engineers found LAUGHABLE a decade ago. Heck, on our local stations, I see more shots of TWITTER displays shot off lousy LCD monitors as the local anchors try desperately to remain HIP by putting on TV the exact same stuff that people are LEAVING their broadcasts to watch on their computers.
Look, I’m not arguing that there’s not a devaluing of standards at work here. I’m arguing that yesterdays “this is absolutely unacceptable” is tomorrow’s commonplace IF it presents a superior enough value or convenience proposition to the market.
That’s what drove DV, then DVCPRO, then XDCAM, then 5dMkii files first into competition, then into DOMINATION over Ikigami, Sony D-900s and their ilk. The last few times I’ve been on location around news crews, they’re probably using some JVC SD Card camera that would have been considered a JOKE a few years ago.
Tech moves on.
The tool does NOT define the professional. And if you think it still does, good luck with planning your career on that basis.
If someone CAN cut a news package on FCP-X – you can BET YOUR LIFE they will. And sooner rather than later. Because it’s an alternative in a world where standards are not fixed ideas, but rather, rapidly evolving moving targets.
That’s just how it is. Like it or not.

Building a business from the garage up where millions worldwide willingly pay a premium for access to your intellectual property and creative ideas and manufacturing design prowess is CRAZY.
Who would EVER want to do such an AWFUL thing.

You are correct in the sense that if your definition of “professional” is reduced to only those who create feature films or high end commercials – you clearly win the argument.
However, I’m sitting here in my own purpose built production studio surrounded by 600 plus 120 minute DVCAM tapes the production of which earned me an extremely comfortable living for decades.
If I let you define my success as someone who didn’t do “MOVIES” or NETWORK TV – I guess I am in trouble.
However (and youngsters watching this discussion from the bleachers, pay careful attention here) if you define success by the ability to engage in work you love, live in a fashion that makes you happy, and attract work that pays you a robust and sustainable living wage – I implore you NOT to let others define what success means for you.
Letting others define what makes you a success or a failure is the ultimate suckers game.

Nowhere in my post do you see the word COWARD. That’s a mental implication that you leapt to. and I’m telling you it’s your SPIN, not my writing.
That you choose to see the terms “comfortable and safe” to be condescending – directly flies in the face of most of the world for whom those words are both empowering and valued on their face. Without TONE – which is your imagined implication here, they are just what they appear to be. Positive statements about something. You cannot re-define them as what you want merely because you elect to read them with an imaginary tone you invent.
You characterize my wording as containing an analog to the term ‘obsequiousness”
I “double dog dare you” (in the fine schoolyard fashion to which this is rapidly descending) to find any word I uses that shows that term as part of any synonym listing. If you can’t – your argument that this was my intent fails on it’s face.
You’re spinning, not arguing based on facts.
You simply over-layed an emotional interpretation that I never intended on what I actually said and even tho I’ve come and clearly stated that what I wrote NEVER had the intent you ascribe to it, now you’re telling me that I’m wrong about what I meant?
This is entrenched thinking at its worst.
Once again, I’ll say it in plain english.
I did not, do not, and never have knowingly had an interest in demeaning those who feel that they need to stick with their current software. Further, I openly acknowledge that there are many very legitimate reasons that FCP-X will fail any number of tests to be an appropriate choice for many users.
Is THAT clear enough for you? Or would you like to work equally hard to find a way to paint this statement with a your perception of some whiff of thinly veiled condesention on my part?

Well, SOMETHING has to account for the fact that EVERY SINGLE reputable business publication shows Apple as currently being the second most valuable company as measured by market cap on the planet – and they’re on track to pass Exxon/Mobil as the MOST valuable if the trends continue as they are.
Interesting how they’ve come from so far back to now be worth more than Microsoft, HP and Dell COMBINED.
As to the original point, market cap may be somewhat incidental – but you can’t argue that having a company that you rely on for working tools be financially strong is a fundamental advantage.

Acually, if we strip out all our personal “who moved my cheese” angst – perhaps it’s a whole order of magnitude simpler than that.
FCP-X was the very first App Store trial where Apple gets $300 bucks every time someone clicks a mouse – every cent outside development personnel costs drops directly to the bottom line.
Even if the clicks slow to a crawl – it still drives bottom line growth since it has virtually NO incremental costs of sales other than it’s miniscule share of whatever bandwidth costs apple accounts for internally.
In retail, margin is one of the holy grail metrics.
The margin on this has to be SICK.
Another good indicators that these guys are playing a totally different game.

How do your read “condecending” into that.
Unless you’re supplying some TONE that I didn’t imply. The words on their face are simple, declaritive – written with a totally neutral tone on this end – and should imply NO judgements about anyone.
That’s the problem with identity based discussions (which this is rapidly devolving into).
As in contemporary politics after a while, it’s virtually impossible to read the words “liberal” or “conservative” without hearing them with a SNEER behind them.
Which is quite sad.
For the record, I honestly BELIEVE that different users have different needs. And that those needs are ABSOLUTELY as appropriate to each party as anyone elses.
If I am inartfully expressing that, it’s my fault and I’ll accept that and apologize. If, on the other hand, you can look back and can see that what I wrote might as easily be taken in a non-confrontational light – than you owe me the same.
Simple as that.
