As a VO talent – I had my own purpose built VO booth for 20 years
Now I rent – as we decide if we’re moving again next year.
So I’ve been down the same path.
What I’ve found is that by switching my computer and the house AC temporarily off, the 10×10 office room I work in is actually perfectably acceptable for occasional VO Work.
I’ve temporarily parked my Neumann large diaphragm condenser and switched to a shotgun mike that has a tighter pattern and doesn’t have as much omnidirectional reach.
And the room is kinda surrounded by deep shelving units full of gear which break up standing waves and eliminate any slapback.
In the colder months, I can record direct to my MacBook Pro if the fans stay off. In the warmer months, I switch to an H4n since it’s silent.
It’s not AS convenient as my dedicated voice booth since I can’t record if the yard crew is working outside the room – but it works just fine.
My advice is to just set it up as best you can and LISTEN to the results.
They might just surprise you!

“This was always fascinating to me.
If my 2011 MacPro era GPU hadn’t been too weak to run the then brand new FCP X – I wouldn’t have had to learn the software on my laptop.
But because I did – I became a trackpad oriented FCP X editor from day one – and that completely unplanned change is what totally broke my decades of mouse reliance.
Now I literally haven’t touched a mouse in years – and the idea of reaching over to a mouse unit and breaking my “home row” hand position to do anything seems really strange.
Looking back it was a major shift in my expectations of how editing happens.
And really nice that with an external trackpad – my editing mechanics do not change – no matter what type system I’m driving.
For me it was one of my careers “happy accidents.”

My experience transitioning from Sierra to High Sierra has been smooth as silk.
I’ve had to access maybe 10 “older” projects that were archived, and it typically takes about 10-20 seconds for the non 10.4 Library to be updated to the revised 10.4 format – and I haven’t had a problem with any of them.
Just how it’s worked for me.

That’s great.
I hope that the discussions of the process that the young directors and teams engaged in are eventually posted as well.
As it typical in these types of student contests (regardless of the tools involved) they were great bunch of young folk, and their attitudes bode well for a future of more voices getting an outlet in our industry.

Totally.
If your base expectation is one system – being forced to use another can be really annoying.
I know for sure that after becoming fully accustomed to the speed and fluidity of magnetic editing – the couple of times I’ve had dip back into the track based systems of my first decade of editing – its been a ROYAL exercise in frustration.
But I can still get the work done. So I think it’s largly an issue of convenience, not capability.
Comfort always follows conditioning.
And every editor is free to build their own personal levels of that.

Oliver, The meeting was recorded via a 3 camera setup – but I don’t know if it was for the LACPUG or for Apple. If the former – it will probably be on-line in a while.
Apple did the same thing at this meeting they been doing recently – (specifying that some content – typically the “current work being done in FCP X” stuff by major performance acts and global players – not be recorded or posted – presumably for IP rights reasons) but also specifying that people at the meeting are free to photograph and post on social sites any thing on display by Apple at the breaks.
Whether what gets released includes a bunch of the formal Apple product team presentations is up to them.
I suspect the student teams presentations and short films will likely see daylight at least, but it’s all speculative in my part.
So how much and/or which parts of the full meeting get posted is a bit up in the air.

I think this is correct.
Users who have had a long history of color work and who legitimately want to keep working as closely as possible to the way they always have – will have some discomfort to confront.
Those who have less prior conditioning – will simply aporoach the new tools as they are and feel “this is how it works” and not really notice any issues.
That description, by the way, applies to many aspects of FCP X. ????
