I might argue that NOBODY has ever wanted to pay for skills or talent. Ever.

Those aren’t economic drivers, really – just means to an end.

People only pay for increasing the odds for an improved economic result – or to buy a comforting perception of greater safety.

The reason any editor gets $1000 a day and another gets $40 is because one has a demonstrated ability to work at a level where the economic risk is much higher – and has convinced someone at a decision making level that they are a safer or smarter choice at THEIR price – than someone they can get for less.

And that’s about it.

I only have time right now to skim the section you referenced, but wow.

Some of this would be AWESOME for a feature style editor using X. For Apple to allow the editor to attach virtual “cards“ directly into storylines that would hold pasted reference graphics and similar visuals slonwith notes – perhaps in conjunction with X’s “to do” markers? -would be amazing for many, many editors.

Then in other places it felt like he was describing wantin EXACTLY what Auditions do right now.

It’s still odd that many Pros seem to have only the vaguest idea of how X actually works – seeing a concept like “keywording” as somehow a non-visual approach – rather than how interconnected it can be into the visual display of selects in a storyboard-like array.

Interesting read.

But it isn’t available for rental – exactly like virtually all movies in the period directly adjacent to their initial release.
So why is that relevant?

Oh, so then you saw it after all? Else how can you know what issues it actually ended up raising?

This concept of so many people feeling free to opine on creative, artistic, scientific, political or even pop culture creations with barely more than a passing second or third hand exposure to them – is, to me, the weirdest thing about the modern era.

Like TRULY odd.

But that’s just me.

Also, with the announced “maybe modular” MacPro revision coming out at some point in the future, Apple has an obvious reason to keep as many current MacHardware editors sticking around as possible, regardless of their software choice.

Some day, when that machine comes out, it’s a totally open question whether it runs non-Apple software at levels that lag, equal or outpace wherever the industry is at that point regarding workflow speed.

Untill then, keeping “you can run Premiere, Resolve, and AVID on this hardware too!” messaging out there seems like a no-brainer to me.

Adobe Premiere Pro Editor, or AVID Media Composer editor…in the same position?

Would we all react the same?

It’s an interesting exercise in separating preconception from tonality.

Interesting. I will say that in it’s current state, it “watches” pretty much like any other documentary style movie.

It looks really good.

Which considering all the various cameras is was shot on, is a pretty remarkably thing. On my retina iPhone X, I honestly couldn’t tell which shots were captured on the $5000 Black Magic camera Brad started with – verses the Red Raven stuff he shot in Europe at IBC last year.

$10 is pretty much price the market places on “movies” as a general category today, documentaries included.

So, really, deciding to go for the equivalent of a “Big Mac Meal” savings today – just means that you chose to stay apart from any really meaningful discussions about the issues it raises, until some future time frame.

Totally fair points, Andrew.

I’m thinking back in the days where “goods” had to be sent to market via a distribution chain that added a really BIG chunk to COGS.

The digital connected software rental model, is obviously very different.

Heck, even with the digital connected sales model Apple uses, they were able to go from a $1200.00 price point down to $399 for their NLE software. Thats a 66% price drop. They surely gamed out the profitability of that.

So there is obviously a HUGE net positive profit effect on costs after a switch to digital distribution. One that I’d suspect greatly dwarfs any year over year rise in labor or the like.

But this is obviously PURELY shirt-tail speculation on my part.

I could be totally wrong and Adobe might be just “keeping up” by instituting this price increase.

If so, I hope Wall Street stays happy – they have a tendency to value bottom line profit growth near the top of their list of good things.
