Just export an XML of your edit.
As we learned with the end of FCP X legacy – you can re-capture a ton of the editing detail for a revised version of the program if you simply have this form of simple text file describing your editing actions. It’s easy, fast, and there’s simply no reason NOT to store a final version XML of your work as a hedge against future program revisions.Archive the assets.
Yes, archive the master file.

Not all, but a nice batch. (Pun intended.)
The big news appears to be the fashion in which they have allowed developer hooks directly into X.
Watching the Frame.IO integration video appears to show a truly integrated approach that is way more than a third party window, and more an extension of the software itself to residence inside inside the app itself.
It will be interesting to see if it works as smoothly as the intro video implies.

Sadly, I’m not going to be at the Creative Summit this year.
The push back in the Summit date this year put it too close to the Thanksgiving break and I’ll be head down revising first of the year executive team video presentations. I’d risk it since I LOVE the Summit and hate missing it – but my largest client is facing a CEO retirement Jan 1. and our creative team needs to be HUGELY responsive right now, and leaving for that weekend is too risky.
With luck, people will come away from the Summit this year thinking “Wow, Bill Davis is much thinner, better looking, and smarter than I imagined. Great guy.”????
So you’ve got the “name baton.”

Think of mics are like spices, each one having it’s own “flavor profile.”
This one has low self noise but requires phantom power, this other one needs NO power, this third one needs batteries. This one is balanced. This one is unbalanced. This one has an omni pattern, this one a cardiod pattern, this one sports a hemispherical boundary pattern.
So in this analogy, you’re asking if you should sell off all your salt and only cook with sugar from now on.
Thing is, you’d NEVER ask a cook that. It’s a silly idea.
Each mic has a flavor. Most sound folk want to learn to be really good audio cooks. Which means they have an array of mics they choose from to solve the specific audio problems they need to solve.
There is no one “perfect” mic. Just various designs and adaptations designed to do specific jobs as well as physics allows.
Good recordists match the mic types they use to he job that needs to be done – like good cooks deploy spices to make their meals taste better.
That’s just how it works.

It’s never felt that way to me, Oliver.
Proxy/Original switching has been astonishingly frictionless for me since FCP X 1.0.
And en/transcoding has constantly sped up over the past 6 years as well. So I barely think about it.
As you well know, field shoots are draining. If you shoot a typical day, you seldom get on an airplane THAT evening. You crash and re-charge before flying out the next day. Hotel room proxy generation is a sleep and forget deal mostly, IME.Plus, just like DSLRs shoot RAW and JPEG at the same time. I can see an evolution on the close horizon where a video capture device will record RAW and Proxy at the same time and shooters leave the set with either/or/both. Maybe Atomos will follow up their ProRes RAW play with something like that by NAB? Who knows. I still think the deployment of RAW of one form or another is waiting for the monitor makers to create something affordable where we can SEE the REC2020 signal reliably. Then all bets are maybe off.
Time will tell.

As usual, I just want to be surprised by SOMETHING I didn’t expect or conceive before the presentation.
As useful as all the “known desires” like dupe detection, enhanced trimming etc would be for many, what still sets X apart from its competitors (for me at least) are the things it embodies that changed my thinking about NLEs after so many decades of thinking largely the same way.
The range-based tagging engine
Horizontal and vertical magnetism.
Roles.That type stuff.
My totally uninformed hopes are something either having to do with multi-user collaboration (MAYBE including some user hooks into the database structure?) , or perhaps something related to furthering audio ingest, mixing and export.
As is widely speculated upon, Apple has been investigating AI, Machine learning, and Virtuality for a while now. So maybe something around those ideas?
I suspect we’ll know soon, as a substantial update is pretty widely expected at the Creative Summit in a few weeks.
We’ll see.

Uh, isn’t this precisely why Emery and the folks at Frame.io spent a significant chunk of their $200,000,000 VC round on file transport security?
It’s not inconceivable that someday, you can drop an encrypted drive off at the digital equivalent of an Alphagraphics – and while you are on the airplane organizing your proxy files, the encrypted originals are being uploaded into your cloud account.
Seems utterly do-able to me.
