Why do you want to do that?
Standard def MPEG-2 is 720×480. 858 wide isn’t even a legal MPEG-2 size – you need width divisible by 16, and normally height as well (although 8 is allowed in HD).

Just select all the clips, and then select the setting you want to use from the Setting menu.

September 21, 2005 at 11:23 pm in reply to: best quality for broadcast w/ limited filesizeIn fact, I’d probably go with straight up MPEG-2 as the most efficient interlaced codec easily supported in QuickTime, assuming you can ingest it on the other end. It can look broadcast quality at 6.5 Mbps for a wide variety of sources.

It’s probably defaulting to the DirectShow .MOV parser, using the DirectShow DV codec. There is a 2GB limit for QuickTime source for that.
I’d recommend you buy Canopus’s ProCoder. It does great MOV to WMV, including big files, runs on Windows, and is really a superset of WME in terms of functionality.

September 20, 2005 at 7:46 pm in reply to: Which Software App./Encoder/Platform Should I be using if…For that, you’ll want either ProCoder or Carbon. It supports reading QuickTime files, and outputting with WMV9-AP using the WM SDK 9.5. WME won’t read your QuickTime source.
If you’re using the DVCPRO-HD codec, only the high-end Carbon will work – AFAIK, it’s the only DVCPRO-HD decoder on Windows in a compression tool.

September 20, 2005 at 7:45 pm in reply to: What encoder/software is best for WMV 10 Encodes?Assuming you mean WMV9-AP files, they work great from Windows Media Encoder and ProCoder/Carbon.
However, I’m sticking to WMV9-MP for almost all my stuff that is getting distributed today, as the WMP10 requirement for WMV9-AP is too high today. WMV9-AP will come into its own on stuff like HD disc formats and IPTV.

September 20, 2005 at 7:43 pm in reply to: Is there a WMV 10 Encode yet? Or is it just the Player thats available in Ten?The current authoring stuff is in the XP-only WM SDK 9.5. That adds WMV9-Advanced Profile, which requires WMP10 for playback.
I agree the numbering is pretty confusing there.

September 19, 2005 at 7:40 pm in reply to: help with real player video playing .rmvb online???First, you really should be using Squeeze 4.1, which fixes a bunch of stuff.
But that’s likely not your problem. Does the file play off the same server on Mac or Win? Is there any chance you had some kind of transmission error when you copied it TO the server?

In my recent testing, I’ve found some pretty significant bugs in Main Concept when doing 16:9 “24p” files for DVD. And Digigami’s doesn’t offer a data rate controlled 2-pass VBR mode. Compressor 2 looks great overall in terms of quality, with the exception of long sequences of static images in VBR mode. These appear to get starved for bits due to the lack of a minimum data rate setting.
My favorite MPEG-2 encoder overall is ProCoder/Carbon. Its only significant limitation is that it doesn’t handle I-frame insertion perfectly yet (they’re working on this).
