I downloaded some freeware metadata editors last night. Some use a sidefile to store the tags, instead of in the mp4 file itself.

I found one called mp3tag that added metadata to the mpeg4 video files. It worked well in adding text to the “Comments” field. VLC displays the comment field.

I believe mp3tag also has an accompanying plugin to index for Google Desktop Search, so you can search your video files for ones with a particular set of tags; but I haven’t tried it.
