I figured out how to fix it and thought I’d post in case anyone runs into this.

FCP automatically rendered my clips while I was away from the machine for a while. I’m not sure why this breaks the multiclip ganging behavior, but it does. By going into Tools->Render Manager and removing all rendered clips, the problem went away.

I went ahead and adjusted preferences to disable auto rendering so it won’t happen again.

A little more info: if I step frame by frame with the arrow keys, each frame first shows the 4-up, then immediately switches to the single camera view. It’s like it wants to show the 4-up but gives up. It does this for each press of the arrow key.

    thanks for any help!

Tried DVCPRO-HD and it can’t handle 4-stream multicam of that either. Looking at data rates, I see:

    original footage: 24Mbit/s
    DVCPRO-HD: 231Mbit/s
    HDV: 26Mbit/s
    XDCAM: 36Mbit/s

I suspect I can handle either the HDV or XDCAM no problem, but looking at the images those two are noticeably softer than the original.

Is there a codec with a lower bitrate that maintains the full 1920×1080 resolution that is also native to FCP for RT editing?

    thx!

Ah well, bummer. Yeah, second shift might work, or maybe I can find another seat on campus in another lab. We don’t have the funds to purchase an additional seat, and honestly rarely have five users at once so it’s not worth it for us. Nobody has their own copy cause they’re all poor students 🙂

Anyone know if FCP only looks within the current subnet or do they report to a central Apple server so that a use of the license anywhere else on campus would trigger it? I’m asking cause I could probably find a machine in another building and install it there for the week if being that separated network-wise would make the difference.

    thx
