Finally found a solution. I contacted Canon and they corroborated that none of the NLEs support their true 24p format. They recommended a freeware converter, xfcpx2, that converts to mpeg2, and from there you can do whatever you want in Compressor.

Audio is coming directly from camera. I shot TRUE 24p (vs. 23.98) and I’ve set Premiere to match. Haven’t messed around with timeline settings, as I was just planning to export from the project folder, but everything is set to 24fps.

Premiere is able to import the MXL files, but there is still an audio drift and stutter. When I try to import the footage to Media Composer, I get these errors:

    I’m trying everything here!

Hey Dan curious if you figured out a solution to the audio drift in 24p as I’m currently wrestling with this problem myself. The canon utility & VLC player are able to playback 24p MXL’s without drift, but Premiere is a problem, and Media Composer and FCP won’t even recognize the footage. I’m trying everything!

I have a trial of Premiere and Media Encoder and have unsuccessfully attempted to convert from both. My workflow: From Canon XF Utility export the bundled MXF folder into 1 self-contained MXF file (which has good playback in VLC); import MXF file to Premiere and playback is stuttered and has audio drift, and then I tried Media Encoder and because there’s no preview for clips in the queue I attempted to export using the exact same settings as the clip (24p), and got similar stutter and audio drift.

    Any idears?

my fcp system does indeed run an older version of qt, but in this case wouldn’t it have problems w all qts? This problem only occurs when I tweak the capture preset from 48 to 32 khz…otherwise my qts are read fine by the older system

thx for suggestions…I came up with a fairly good workaround: pasting different parts of the picture/work path into different layers. Then I can animate each layer/group of masks seperately, and then sequence the overall animation/illustration.

  • belated follow-up here.
    I’m located in nyc.

We’ve decided to go to a house, but we’d like to upconvert the titles ourselves. We have access to an avid symphony. Our flow is this: spit out to minidv, re-aquire in the avid at one to one, do titles there at one to one, rent a digibeta deck, spit out to it, and send to hd house for a quick 24 hour turn-around. Any thoughts here on process/economics?

  • thanks jeremy, but it ain’t working. I’m not sure what you mean by “trim function,” but i know the proper configurations for MM to do its thing. any other ideas?
