The problem was that we didn’t know you can’t shoot 1080p at 60 fps. Lesson learned! I know about the shutter speed thing–that wasn’t an issue.
What I ended up using for the slow motion effect was a plugin called Twixtor. Really impressive and intelligent slow motion plugin. Here’s the final video, all shot at 24fps and slowed down to, at the most, 50%.

Thanks guys for the quick help. This is a great community of support and info.

yep. as soon as you mentioned 720p i realized where we went wrong. lesson learned, and they’re always painful.
so now is there any decent way to achieve slow motion in post? I’m looking into twixtor but that’s pricey.
thanks again

i’m afraid your assumption has just answered my question: you can’t shoot 60fps at 1080, can you? only 720.
i didn’t shoot, and we’ve never done 60fps. i know the camera was set at 60fps, but if your shooting 1080 then it must default to 24fps. is that correct?
so is the only solution now to slow it down in post, which will look terrible so there’s no point in doing so?
thanks

the clips are 1920 x 1080. they play at normal speed at fps.
i wasn’t shooting, but i do know the fps were set at 60, but is there something wrong with shooting 1080p at 60fps?
thanks

I think it was a combination of driver error and vehicle error… I’ve been looking into it and the footage shot on the 5D says it’s 30fps when it’s actually 29.97(?) So i might have been going off misinformation from the start, and from there it snowballed into relentless variants of frame rates and settings.
The audio was proceeding the video, so my short term solution was to export the final edit with no audio at 29.97 (through compressor) and import it to a new timeline with the old previously drifting audio. everything is fine.
my long term solution is to do some tests with this footage, run it through compressor first, and figure out a better work flow for the future.
Live and learn! Thanks for the help.

my previous post didn’t go through i guess…
it was shot on a 5D. the footage when I got it was H264 at 30 fps. when i started cutting i used the XDCAM 1080p30 profile and DID NOT yet change it to 30fps–it was edited at 29.97. there were some minor audio mixing & effects done so i exported audio track to single aiff, re-imported it and that’s when the audio drifted and when I changed to 30 fps.
now the problem is i can’t get the drifting to stop. tried a new project at both 30 and 29.97, tried exporting and importing different ways–just trying to figure this out. thanks for any help. if i could send you a check i would!

AND how do I fix the problem? No matter what my settings are now (29.97 or 30) the audio drifts.

thanks for the response! i’m new to editing in other fps and in HD. i know “p” is progressive but the project was shot at 30 fps–so wouldn’t having it in 29.97 be problematic? i didn’t shoot the footage and it was H264 at 30 fps when I got it. what would be the best way to work with that? I encoded it to XDCAM at 30fps.
and thanks again for the help.
