+1 to Walter’s idea: you’ll need to use Maya to create some relatively basic geometry and then use camera projection. This method works much better for dolly-in/out or track-right/left shots rather than for 360-degree spins, however. (Things get much tricker for 360-degree stuff — you may need to shoot stills for a new location and project an environment from that….)

Don’t despair! Camera projection is a lot of fun! (And, the first time especially, a lot of work!)

The short-term solution therefore is to transcode into a new codec (like ProRes or DNxHD) before trimming.

Thanks Vince. My mind is in AE-land, so I was assuming you had to copy/paste the interpretation. Funny that a multiple selection never occurred to me!

It’s in the switches for each layer:

You want the jagged line to be smooth, like this:

(This second is the default, by the way, but there’s a chance you accidentally toggled it….)

You can also try applying a slight blur to the jagged object. I’d use the Fast Blur filter, maybe set to 0.5 or something. In fact, a slight blur + a little grain can help “smooth” out a lot of things!

September 21, 2011 at 3:24 pm in reply to: Tracker won’t track certain scenes.

Increase the search area — the large box around the tracker point. That defines the area that AE will search in the next frame, so if there’s a lot of shaking going on, you’ll need to have a large enough box to account for that shake. Note that the larger the box, the more image there is to process, and thus the longer it takes….

  • Two screenshots — full-res in AE, full-res compressed — would be helpful. Can you post those for us?

    Hi Maarten,
In your program window, click the options button in the upper-right-hand corner, and check to see if your “playback resolution” is set to “Full”:

(Those are custom hotkeys, by the way; you’ll have to set your own…)

A few shots in the dark:
    – Have you somehow turned off the anti-aliasing switch? (Try rendering with “Best Settings” (or is it “Best Quality”?) and if the problem goes away, this might be it.

    – Are you viewing it at full-size? Maybe it’s 1080 and you’re viewing at 33% or something…

    – Are you using the “Transform” effect instead of the standard transform features? (The Transform effect does introduce some jagged lines when rotating, I’ve noticed)

September 21, 2011 at 2:55 am in reply to: How to track a garbage matte

I’m not quite following what the image you’re working with looks like, but you might want to try the “calculations” filter. Look at your R, G, and B channels, and find the ones that offer the most contrast for the edges you’re interested in, then use Calculations to enhance those contrasty edges. That plus a garbage matte can create some relatively nice mattes…..

I’ll second RoRK on that. I just used asimilar technique to remove collars off the necks of several animals. It’s a lot of work but it’s quite effective.
