    Russell,
This is an interesting problem. I am experiencing something similar, although I am using Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme.
I have been unable to edit to tape from a 23.976 sequence with out the deck recording gray or a very messed up picture or the picture looking good except for a small “worm” creeping across screen. I am trying to edit to either HDCAM, HDCAM SR, or D5. In all cases the VTR is clearly not happy with sync.
I did a test record from a 2nd FCP suite with the same versions of software etc. I was able to record a 30 second sequence on tape. This says it can be done. I have since tried connecting the first computer up to the 2nd computer’s break out box, but was still unable to get a good record.
I am able to edit to tape in PAL, NTSC, and 50i.

I have tried all of the sync options on the vtrs – we have a sync router with 23.976 etc. Tried video loops back to FCP, tried sending another deck’s signal to FCP, etc. Editing deck-to-deck works. Editing deck-to-deck with FCP driving the recorder also works.

    I am using:
    Mac Dual Quadcore (8 core)
    OS 10.4.11
    QT version 7.5
Multibridge Extreme version 6.4 (also tried 6.6.2, 6.7)

Check what speed your audio was recorded at (24/25fps). Your audio is digitised separately. Set your DAT (if that is what it is) to the appropriate speed.

    Jeremy,
Can you hear audio through your Mac while digitising, or through external monitoring?

    Thanks Erik,
I’ll have to investigate the setups of the 2 facilities where I’ve noted the lack of audio monitoring during capture.

I’ve had a quick look at Boris, however, the first thing I looked for was the ability to type text over the picture (as in Avid’s Title Tool), and I didn’t find anyway to do this. Perhaps I just need to RTFM.

I am a fan of information – I have tc displayed as an overlay in FCP; I have it above the viewer in Avid – very useful. Even more useful would be the ability to use these numbers in computations like in the old Sony 9100.

I’m still a newbie with FCP, however, I’m am surprised no one mentioned having the ability to monitor audio while digitising – it freaks me out not being able to hear what i’m recording. The mac can show me what I’m recording, I would think it is an easy thing to handle audio (even just the meters).

Oh, and could we get a WYSIWYG text tool? Avid’s Type Tool is pretty bad, but it is better than this.

That said, I do like the way you can adjust audio levels while playing a clip.

    My 2c worth.

Thank you Walter for your insight. That clears up how Ripple Delete and Close Gap work.

Thank you Debe for your work-around. I’ll have to be extra careful with multi-layered timelines.

    Hi,
I have 18 years post-production experience – mostly spent editing, with the last 6 years working only on Avid.
That said: I want to do a Ripple Delete and it seems (according to the manual) that all I have to do is shift-delete etc. This wont work (and neither will Close Gap) unless I lock all other tracks first. Oddly, this is a one button fuction on the Avid (not to mention it is used all the time). I have clips on other tracks. FCP 5.1.1.
Is there another way, or is it really that difficult?

    Thanks,
    Ben Broad.
