It can definitely be flash. gradation is most likely used for the fades.

I know for AE windows version it is the plus(+) zoom in and minus(-) zoom out but not the plus and minus by the numeric key pad. it’s the “_” and “=” keys. I don’t necessarily think you have to have the timeline “selected/highlighted” either. Hope this helps.
