Thanks Bob and Robert. Bob, your repsonse is indeed wonderful. However, I think there is a happy medium between an argument of *never* having to upgrade, vs. upgrading every time you turn your head. Remember when we could add storage and memory to macs? Remember when macs had ports? Of course we all do, and, of course I will happily upgrade when needed. But I also do not like the amount of waste our industry creates in this constant pursuite with an ever diminishing desire for futureproofing. I find it somewhat foul and arrogant, to be honest.
Robert, can I make the assumption from this conversation, that I can happily purchase a T3 Raid, plus a T2 adaptor, until I am ready to purchase a new iMAC?
Is this a lossless transfer? I work with MINI DV tapes, and have yet to find a better workflow than the following, which is not ideal, but it is lossless: 1. play tapes from mini dv deck 2. connect via firewire to OLD mac laptop with firewire 800 doc. 3. Import via FCP or Premiere Pro – although I end up using FCP because premiere sticks with tape media. That is, unless I am missing something.
I am ultimately looking to build a mini dv archive suite, which will include purchase of a better minidv deck (from who knows where). Phil, there are resources to look into on https://amianet.org/
