I was also blown away by the coldplay ad. ive spent weeks trying to find out how it was done.
I asked the makers of the commercial ben logan of logan tv. they said it was done in Maya and AE.
I also thought Fumefx would do that well. Does anyone else think they know how you could do those fluid particles following the guitar etc.

and also Mr Burker, you work at WMUR. that is super awesome, Im an upcoming filmmaker and vfx artist in Manchester NH. i work at mcam tv down the road from u guys and also freelance. Now i have someone i can ask about this type of stuff.
