September 26, 2012 at 1:00 am in reply to: What’s it called when an edit rolls back the clock?Sounds like repeat cut is the term, as David says; at least I found more references to that than double cut or shutter cut.
I would agree that it can be misused, as some here have implied. But I guess when you shoot something that costs a lot of money, or something that is really supposed to impress the audience, you might be tempted to use it more than once on the screen.
Anyway, thanks for all the answers!

I think this is the video that inspired me to ask the question:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypQEvoDqyRQ
It’s not an exceptional example, just fairly typical of the breed. There are frequent cuts that seem to serve no purpose. Are these cuts because the talent made a mistake? Or are they “artsy” cuts? Or is a silence of more than 300 ms something that absolutely must be removed? I don’t know.

April 5, 2012 at 10:34 am in reply to: Driver issue when trying to use CUDA with VegasWell, I found the fix. There are some pages on the Web that talk about a “DevicesConnected” registry parameter for the nVidia drivers. I added this parameter after installing the 296.10 driver, and it works … that is, with this parameter in place, you can force the video card to output digital to your monitor(s), which allows you to use CUDA for Vegas without sacrificing the digital output to your monitor(s).
So, in summary, this is the important thing: If you update your nVidia driver in order to benefit from CUDA for faster rendering in Vegas, and your monitor suddenly starts working in analog mode rather than digital mode after installing the newer driver, add the following binary value to your registry after installing the driver, and reboot:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlVideoxxxxx000DevicesConnected
where xxxxx is a long string that will vary from machine to machine (look for the folder that has hundreds of parameters in the 0000 folder). Set the value to binary and use a value of 00 00 03 00, which will force both monitors to digital.
You can google for this for more details.

Thanks for the tips.
Concerning the wipe on the car: Since I don’t have a lot of control over who walks in front of my camera in these videos, I often have shots interrupted by a car or person crossing the frame at close range. Trying to make the best of a bad thing, I hit upon the idea of using the object or person as a way of dragging a linear wipe transition across the frame. I just assumed that centering the wipe on the object or person would make it less obtrusive than having it follow or precede the moving element, since it would be sort of invisible if the viewer is following the object rather than the edge of the wipe. You’re saying that it’s bad to put a wipe right on something that is moving? How should it be done, then? Or is a linear wipe a bad way to deal with objects that wash through the frame to begin with?

Reading this reminds me of Quinn Martin Productions, which always seemed to have titles saying “Act II,” “Act III,” and so on after each commercial break in a series episode. I always wondered if that was just a stylistic touch meaning “we’re back from the commercials,” or if the episode truly was divided into acts in some formal way.

Thank you for all the replies. It’s obviously too late to change this video, but I can practice shooting the same topic and see if I can get something that flows better.
One reason I was so close to the traffic lights is that their design is important to the shot (I wanted to show how there are little lights that duplicate the big lights), but I will nevertheless take your advice for future shots.

February 23, 2012 at 1:51 pm in reply to: How do I stay “fresh” when reviewing edits?Thank you for all the suggestions and the pointer to the other thread. I’m relieved to see that real editors apparently have the same difficulty remaining “fresh” as I do. I’ll try to use some of these methods to keep my viewpoint objective.

Thank you all for the replies. I think I’ll continue to work on a single trailer over and over until it looks right. There’s no urgency so I have time to practice. I’ll try to incorporate all your suggestions.

I think something was broken in going from Platinum HD 10.0 to 11.0. The previous video didn’t have any problems like this (that I noticed), and it was edited with 10.0.
