    Hmmm . . . Not sure how to say this, Bruno . . .

I’ve had an EX1 for nearly two years and added an EX1R last Friday to give me more camera angles (and for its superb features).

I’ve shot hundreds of hours of footage on the EX1 and was totally unaware of the shot transition functions you mentioned.

How stupid of me. If I’d bothered to read the manual properly, instead of assuming the transitions were the same as on the Z1 (fade-in, fade-out etc) I could have made good use of them.

Not just getting old, I think I must be getting narrow minded too.

Anyway, thanks for enlightening me – I think I’ll go and read the manual now.

I think the top item on my wish list would be (up to) 2.5 stops of under-exposure in the TLCS level menu.

Without trying to be funny, I’m curious as to why anyone who isn’t shooting material that might be going out live somehow would want to insert transitions ‘on camera’ rather than in post.

It seems to me a waste of the camera’s resources but I’m more than ready to learn why the manufacturers still provide this facility.

Hope I haven’t double-posted here. My first effort didn’t show up.

According to Philip Johnston on this EX1R review, the EX1R does not suffer this problem.
He claims it has a filter in front of the sensor.

I hope he’s right, it was one of the key points when I made the decision to buy the EX1R.

This works for NON-PAL areas but in PAL areas, there’s no pulldown so unchecking “remove Advanced pulldown and dup frames” won’t fix the problem for these people.

    Thanks for posting the fix.
I’ll keep it in mind in case I get the same problem.

Don, by “LEAST 1/48th” I presume you mean 1/48th sec or SLOWER?

Surely a higher shutter speed is going to exaggerate the strobing?

And by the way, all of us over here in PAL land have been shooting at 25 fps for donkey’s years because we had no choice. There can’t be a noticeable difference between 24 and 25 fps – can there??

June 5, 2008 at 6:53 am in reply to: EX1 external audio question

I use the Sennheiser ew100 G2 regularly on Channel 1.
I have the camera Audio Trim set to -50dBu and the Audio Level wheel for that channel set to between 5 and 6.

The Sensitivity on the G2 Transmitter is set to -20 and the AF Out level on the Receiver is -24. I’m currently making a DVD about training Sheepdogs (herding dogs). It involves all voice levels, from a very quiet reassuring (near whisper) to shouting at the top of my voice!

So far, I’m very pleased with the audio – no peaking whatsoever, in fact, one particular shout yesterday managed to push the audio level no nearer the dreaded zero than -6dB.

I’d be interested to hear from those who are more qualified than me on this – my only slight problem is that if the Sennheiser (K6) ME64 mounted on camera and feeding Channel 2, if the level of my voice gets near equal on both channels (G2’s lavalier on me and ME64 on camera) I detect a slight ‘swirling’ or ‘swimmy’ sound.

Would this be the EX1’s limiter cutting out the peaking? If so, how do I disable it?

I couldn’t find a fix for the problem until I discovered the Sony EX1.

I traded the Panny for the Sony and it’s one of the best moves I ever made.

Now my footage is “pin sharp” because at last I have a camera I can properly and quickly focus.

There are only two features on the HVX200 that I miss: The pre-record buffer and four channels of audio. In all other respects, the Sony is a far superior (and more user-friendly) camera.

And I get 55 minutes of top quality footage on my two 8GB cards!
