This media restore only happens when you reinsert the card into the camera>>>

I experienced this “Restore?” error while shooting EX3 with MxR adapter and Transcend 16Gb SDHC card. Totally random it seemed, after shooting 12 minutes of footage over 32 clips. Did not remove the card, but had been turning camera off between shots to save battery. I switched to the B card, recorded 45 minutes and 120 clips without problem. Later executed the Restore on the A card, and all the clips came back alive, except for the last one before the crash.

I’ve marked this SDHC card and will look out for any other errors, thinking perhaps the card has a defect? Have not had any other problems with MxR/Transcend combo.

I get it now, thanks Craig. Thus Enrique’s search for a USB card reader for MxR. What about placing the SDHC card directly into a simple USB card reader? Is that a possible solution?

I was disappointed to discover that my MxR card adapter is not read by the Sony SBACUS10 USB reader. Unlike with the Sony SxS card, the MxR when inserted does not seem to click into place, and the drive status light doesn’t go on. The MxR card adapter with Transcend 16Gb SDHC records fine, and is recognized and reads when in-camera and connected via USB transfer to MacG5. But not when placed into Sony’s USB card reader… Has anyone experimenting with MxR experienced this?

I’m a new user, and my current workflow is to FIRST create the camera archive, using either my desktop MacG5 to copy the BPAV to an archive HDD, using the camera USB or the Sony Card Reader USB (not much difference in speed, about 2x real time for me), or in the field, using a WindowsXP laptop running Sony XDCam Clip Browser and the USB card reader to a USB HDD. This is much slower than a Express Card/34 transfer would be, but I’m not ready to buy the MacPro or MBP. Then I ingest to FCP 6.0.5 from the archive HDD with either Log & Transfer or XDCAM Transfer plug-ins. I transfer to RAID scratch disk for editing, then delete the ingested clips after approval/delivery. The archive HDD goes on the shelf with a print log when full. I’m more concerned with archiving the camera footage safely than the speed of transfer.

Would appreciate any feedback on this process from more experienced editors…

    Sean,
If the rental unit includes a USB cable, you should be able to download the free Sony EX Transfer plug-in for FCP, then connect the camera to G5 via USB and import directly into FCP. Elsewhere on this forum I’ve read of a way to transfer the HQ files to a folder on your drive directly, then import to NLE. If you shoot 25Mb/s HDV, the firewire connection should work, but won’t for the HQ 35Mb/s video. I’d be currious to know what happens for you, as I have a PPC G5 as well and am struggling to decide if I have to upgrade the computer before buying the camera.

Ahh, this is the first clear statement of what will/won’t work on my PPC Dual 2.0 G5. If I understand, the EX Transfer plug-in for FCP will allow me to import the files to FCP, but I can’t use Clip Browser to view, rename, edit or add metadata to clips. Don, can you point me to your source or any other info on non-Intel compatibility?

[Craig Seeman] “ar I’ve only used USB on my PPC and Intel Macs and find about 2x from PPC and 4x from Intel (a lowly Mac Mini no less) when dragging the contents of the SxS cards. The speeds are slower when using the Sony XDCAM xfer software. I haven’t tried the clip browser which works on Intel Mac but not PPC compatible”

I have a Dual 2.0Ghz PPC G5. Sounds like the Sony Clip Browser will not work with this hardware. Can I still transfer SxS card files into FCP6.0.2 via USB with the XDCAM xfer plugin, copy the (rewrapped) .mov files to DVD or HD for archive, and erase the SxS card for reuse with the camera? Or is it better to drag the .mp4 files from the card to an archival hard drive, then import to FCP via XDCAM plug in? I’m struggling to see if I can use this camera immediately without buying a new Intel MacPro or MacBookPro, or both.
