    Hi Dennis,

Yes – have been using that dynamic linking for years between Photoshop and After Effects — mentioned it for the FCP7-only crowd that might not realize this advantage.

By the way — Dennis and his support team are an invaluable “feature” of the entire Adobe Creative Suite.

Unlike Apple’s virtual non support/response for anything FCP 7 – Dennis and others at Adobe not only return emails and calls — they’re actually on these forums answering questions and listening to feature requests.

This simply didn’t exist with FCP7 (unless you were Walter Murch) — and Apple’s silence on FCPX (until the critical firestorm seemed to have changed things) was enough to make a 10 year FCP veteran look for a new editing partner.

If you’re a FCP7 editor, PP CS6 will feel familiar…and adds features that make editing a breeze.

Thanks for the update on updates – downloaded the CS6 suite and my reaction – Sweet.

Get the Boris CC and Coremelt Plugins and you’ll feel as though you’re using a very responsive FCP 8 with its endless effects options. Open the FCP7 keyboard shortcuts and you feel like you’re in an old familiar home. –

Integration between PPPro and After Effects is terrific – just like the Motion to Final Cut Pro 7 integration worked way back when – you make a change over there – it shows up here – as with Photoshop and Audition files (Apple -why did you remove that functionality in the new version..or am I missing something?)

I’m aware of the media management shortcomings and long output render times —

but overall the zippiness and “it edits the way we’ve invested our professional livelihoods learning” makes this a terrific choice.

Before the FCPX cheer-leading squad moves in for the kill – I like a lot about that program too – just can’t get my head around the “think different” (read Apple’s way or the highway) philosophy on trackless – put all the media where we tell you – no audio mixer automation odd conventions that seem like different for the sake of being different.

And roles? Do editors really have to twist themselves into a pretzel to do what they’ve been able to do with standard tracks for more than a decade? And was there a professional editor out there that couldn’t handle track collisions?

I’m still using 7 but now see PP6 as a viable option. Using AVID as well but only because some clients demand it. For speed and flexible fx options – this feels like a winner

Quick Premiere engineers – to the DeLorean! Fly back and time and fix this OMF oversight in your out of date software.

A nano second Google search reveals the CS6 Premiere does OMF export….a simple upgrade to a vastly better editing program (yes it really is the Final Cut 8 you were waiting for…with a number of things still to be addressed – primarily the horrendously long export times)

    (From the Adobe Web site)

    https://www.adobe.com/ap/products/premiere/extend.displayTab2.html

    OMF export

“Export your audio in Open Media Framework (OMF) format for interchange with audio workstations. Then import the final audio back into Adobe Premiere Pro and use direct audio channel routing to preserve the final mix.”

It’s beyond absurd that there are 24 replies from “yeah – this is a big headache” to “you hurt my feeling saying something bad about something FcPX doesn’t do….

The bottom line is – this problem (and many others) didn’t exist before FCPX. And in fact doesn’t exist in any other NLE (well maybe IMOVIE)

When Apple makes this as usable to do what you could easily do before —

without twisting yourself into a pretzel

The “pros” will stop making the other “pros” feel bad about their choice and just use it.

In the meantime FCP7 PP6 and Avid are all working just fine

Who has time to waste on an application that doesn’t do what you need?

    `Key – Maximize current Frame —

Great shortcut – but if you have the FINAL CUT PRO 7 keyboard shortcuts chosen as your default you must use SHIFT plus the ` (key next to the number 1 on your keyboard) to toggle full frame on and off of the window you are working in

  • Clearly you are not taking this with the seriousness this demands!

Has anyone else received this survey?

My friend did – I didn’t so I don’t know what the real questions are (but a whoosh or clang for magnetism would be WAY cool)

Interesting that Apple would, just now, start eliciting opinions. Are they serious about fixing the shortcomings or running scared with Smoke, PP CS6 and others grabbing their formerly satisfied customers?

April 30, 2012 at 11:36 pm in reply to: Backup

This is about as useful as not having it at all. This is not progress

1 – a back up or auto save should be on a hard drive that doesn’t contain your project or media – so if that drive crashes – you can recover the project from another drive

2 – having something at saves just 15 minutes ago and erases all other versions — runs the risk of saving a copy of the same corrupted project file and replacing it every 15 minutes.

You won’t know if the file is corrupted until you quit and try to reload and voila – sorry file is corrupted…and hey, so is the only backup copy of the project you’ve spent days weeks months working on because it only saved one copy 15 minutes ago.

The MacBreak guys are great – but when they bemoan “all those auto save files piling up in legacy final cut” Those auto saves saved our bacon more times than I can recount over the years. They are tiny project files easily deleted when the projects are done.

Come on apple – make the autosave incremental and let us put it on another drive so we can control it and be able to look back as far as we want if we have to salvage a project

  • First – a fan note to Craig

love your posts — you are endlessly optimistic — but i googled Craig Seeman and “suspect” as in “I suspect Apple will do this/that/the other thing”

    came up with 2790 hits!

More suspects than a good Columbo episode!

Seriously, I suspect most editors, (there google me – my first suspect entry!) as Walter Biscardi discovered at NAB have had it with Apple and FCPX. The new breakthrough features are simply nailing functions back on that were ripped off the fuselage in the first place.

And for everyone who cheer-leads the program and dismisses the dinosaur editors who “just can’t change with the times” – you forget we were the BIGGEST FCP cheerleaders — changing to a new, better, editor centric program and sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for the next release

Go watch the editor’s lounge part 2 (below)

    https://vimeo.com/channels/editorslounge#40363040

and Watch the manager from Bunim Murray say how he was in on the beta testing…told Apple what didn’t work….and how Apple ignored EVERYTHING he suggested. This wasn’t a part-time prosumer editor – he may have been FCP’s biggest professional volume customer.

Before dismissing this as just another FCPX complainer — I desperately wanted this to work and not have to spend a month learning AVID and finding work arounds for the incredibly easy one click effects and transitions in FCP 7 — a year later the program’s still buggy – audio still is unusable for mixing in the program (sorry even range selecting and “ducking” is not real time mixing) Still no export segments (really, how hard can that be?) and on and on….Apple – you make incredible products – I’ve been with you since the beige 128K first Mac Box that ran on a floppy….but this was an epic fail….you were ahead of your time with the NEWTON but it failed with consumers

I “suspect” this is not a fail with consumers, but with Broadcast and Film pros who lifted FCP legacy into orbit.

    Wish it wasn’t so

April 13, 2012 at 4:59 am in reply to: Questions for CS6

Ok my FCP to PREMIERE PRO CS6 questions

1 – custom layouts – love the button bar in FCP7 for quick layout switches – is this possible in CS6?

    2 – audio normalization – assignable to button in FCP7 – available in CS6?

3 – keyboard shortcut to globally raise/lower volume by x number of dbs – possible here?

4 – blur transitions – popular but only available on third party in FCP..or roll your own with filters in and out of clips…CS6?

    and this is big –

Autoduck like export of project to AVID – we use this ALL THE TIME in FCP 7 (Thank you Wes..for making it FREE!) I assume with Wes now working at Adobe this function is now built in?

So many questions but look forward to working with the new Final Cut 8…sorry PP CS6!
