not to schill my own book, but i did just have a book on compression published by Peachpit called Real World Video Compression. I think the cheapest price on its on Amazon right now:

    https://www.amazon.com/Real-World-Video-Compression/dp/0321514696/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209671249&sr=8-1

Brian’s Ripple Training is great by the way – if you are specifically using Compressor, I suggest trying it out.

Not on the Mac, but my company inlet technologies (inlethd.com) has a tool for analyzing video files named Semaphore. Its only $995 – cheap when you compare it to the $10k+ competitors. FWIW, it runs great in boot camp and several of us use it this way.

    Semaphore – https://www.inlethd.com/encoding/19/17/Semaphore/

There is a fully functioning 15 day free trial available, so if you just need this as a one off test, you may not have to by it at all.

    Hi Alex –

To my knowledge (others feel free to correct) the high quality button is there to enable showing the full res version of a DV codec QT movie. by default, a lower resolution of DV is displayed for playback purposes, but the HQ button is there to allow you to over ride that. I typically use it if i need to do a screen grab of a DV clip for documentation of something else. This should no effect the quality at all when laying back to tape or encoding into another codec.
